Otava Folk High School is an independent learning institution owned by the city of Mikkeli in Eastern Finland. Otava Folk High School aims at supplementing the formal educational system and finding and providing alternatives to serve students otherwise left outside of the educational system. We have a long history in pedagogical expertise and we are innovators in online learning. Otava Folk High School is the only school in Finland where you can complete upper secondary school online. Otava Folk High School strives at being international and strengthening its staff’s professional skills in order to continue being an educational pioneer. Such goals allow the school to remain focused on the future. There are 18 staff members from different professional backgrounds such as teachers, trainers, instructors and administrators that are involved in the mobility project and who will take part in different courses around Europe. The courses that our staff take part in include new teaching methodologies and tools, cultural and linguistic skills and project management. Training under the mobility project allow the participants to enhance their expertise and expand their horizons on new pedagogical and participatory methods, encountering ethnic and other minorities, developing language skills, motivating students and making use of IT in teaching and learning. After the mobilities the participants will have a deeper understanding of the practicalities of adult education in different European countries and we’ll be able to assess how we fare as a learning institution on a European level. Mobilities will help us to learn and develop our school as well. The project is a part of our strategic development plan. Networks created during the mobilities will enable us to expand our activities in Europe and for example offer training to other learning institutions.
