Start date: Sep 30, 2009, End date: Sep 29, 2010 PROJECT  FINISHED

During the last two centuries the view of history and historical events has become a key factor of national identity in Middle-Eastern Europe. It is characterized by the single-sided depiction of the national mythology and rejection of different ideas. Only in the last decade has demand arisen both for summary of facts and confrontation and reconciliation of different opinions. The problems of the two countries are characteristic of those of the region divided by borders, since there is little established cooperation to explore, cherish and present the common past. The presentation of the coexistence of the two nations is particularly insufficient in the educational system. Thus, it is essential for our view of past and knowledge of history to be founded on actual scientific facts in order to assimilate the opinions and knowledge of people living in the two areas. Achievements: During the last two centuries the view of history and historical events has become a key factor of national identity in Central-Eastern Europe. It is mostly characterized by the single-sided depiction of the national mythology and rejection of different ideas. Only in the last decade did the demand have arisen in the society both for summary of facts and confrontation and reconciliation of different opinions. The project offered an opportunity for Slovak and Hungarian sociologists, historians, teachers and students and a joint platform to meet and discuss viewpoints and opinions about different historical topics and questions within the frames of historian conferences. The project paid attention to the exploration of the history of gypsies as well, and helped the integration of their ethnic history into national history.
