Knowing me, knowing you … through cultural heritage.

All partner schools wanted to create close links with our European partners through our learners, staff, parents and community gaining knowledge and understanding of each others cultural heritage.Through participation in this project we were all able to develop a new and very rewarding enthusiasm and interest in each others cultural heritage. It gave students, staff and parents a valuable insight into each participating country’s past and present and also to consider our future. Our students all have a wide range of special educational needs and it was felt to be very important that they were able to encounter, create and experience physical artefacts and materials as well as have the opportunity to visit other countries and participate in and experience cooperation with others and experience their food, cultures and history. Our project was extremely successful in increasing the self esteem of learners and helped them to develop acceptance, communication, knowledge and respect for other cultures and also provided equal opportunities for learners with disabilities to learn about and interact with learners in other participating European schools. We were also very successful in reducing prejudice and creating open minded learners. Staff participation also enabled them to experience and learn new teaching methods, ideas and resources used successfully in partner special schools. We have also taken benefit from sharing professional development, including sharing teaching and learning methods, use of assessment, planning and materials.Examples of how participants met the aims of the project can be found in the results.Mobilities of both staff and students were extremely beneficial and provided excellent opportunities for all to fully participate and further develop individuals knowledge and understanding of other partner countries, cultures and languages.
