KIKUS with us
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

During the cooperation with pre-school teachers focused on the integration of young children who are not native speakers of Czech or Slovak, the pedagogical workers often presented the need of suitable and appropriate language learning program of Czech/Slovak as a second language. Existing teaching materials and aids for language support are highly insufficient in Czech and Slovak Kindergartens. The lack of suitable and systematic language learning program supposed to be filled by project KIKUS with us via transferring and adaptation of the KIKUS Method to the Czech/Slovak-speaking pre-school education. KIKUS is a fully-integrated language learning program designed to encourage and promote early multilingualism. The KIKUS Method is based on the linguistic principles of the Action Theory of Speech. Transferred KIKUS method will include following materials developed: The KIKUS Method: A Handbook ; KIKUS Worksheets for parent-child collaboration ; KIKUS Picture Cards; KIKUS Mini Picture Card Worksheets. The aim of the project is the building and increasing the competences and confidence of pedagogical workers in the integration of children who are not native speakers of Czech/Slovak. Chosen pedagogical workers will be directly trained in using the KIKUS method in the Kindergartens, other pedagogical workers will be methodologically supported in using the method as well. The using of the KIKUS Method will encourage and support the children’s ability to communicate and function in more than one language from an early age. One of the target groups of the project are pedagogical workers of Kindergartens (from partners organization) which are coming into the daily working contact with the children who are not native speakers of Czech/Slovak. Each involved Kindergarten (CZ, SK) will nominate 2 pedagogical workers. They will be trained in the KIKUS method (learning program) and will have the possibility to test and use this method and methodological materials in the field. Besides of the target group of involved pedagogical workers from partner organizations there will be another group of pedagogical workers of Kindergartens supported. These pedagogical workers will be involved during second pilot phase and 15 of them (totally 30, 15 in each country CZ, SK) will be trained in seminars. Another target group of project are pedagogical experts in the field of inclusion of children who are not native speakers of Czech/Slovak which will be also trained in KIKUS Method, cooperate together on the transfer and adaptation of methodological materials and will be able to provide methodological support and training to other pedagogical workers from Kindergartens (approx. 300). Applicant organization META will have 5 experts involved; partner organization Marginal will have 4 experts involved. By using the KIKUS methodology in the Kindergartens the project will support also children whose first language is not Czech/Slovak with language skills well below those of native Czech/Slovak speaking children of the same age and therefore inadequate for an effective education in an school system. In such a situation, the intelligence and abilities of these children cannot be appropriately supported and promoted without aimed and adequate language support. The KIKUS methodology will be also tested in the Primary school environment (small groups), so also the pupils whose first language is not Czech/Slovak will be supported by such approach. Applicant organization META will be the coordinator of project responsible for overall project management, communication, project and budget monitoring, dissemination and evaluation. Each partner organization will nominate the contact person and will follow the rules for project implementation. The main project outcomes are focused on educating the professionals in pre-school educational environment on how to improve the language skills (in both mother and second tongue) of children with migratory background. We will provide these professionals with sufficient combination of training, methodological support and teaching materials, so they will be able to use the method in their practice (and disseminate the method as well) also after the end of the project.
