Kielikurssi ja opetusjakso ulkomaisessa aikuiskoulutusorganisaatiossa
Start date: Jul 1, 2014, End date: Jun 30, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

In the incoming years a lot of reforms will be taking place in the Finnish upper secondary schools, therefore also Savonlinna upper secondary school for adults wants to develop its teaching practices and its employees’ competence to meet with the challenges of today’s society better. An oral part will be included in the new matriculation examination for languages and also the new curriculum will emphasise the importance of language skills. That’s why it is important that our teachers would have an opportunity to develop both their teaching abilities and methods as well as their language skills. There are two active teachers (adult education) who would participate in the Erasmus+ project of the town of Savonlinna. One is a Finnish and literature teacher who also teaches Finnish as a second language and Spanish. The other teaches English and German. In the autumn 2015 the Finnish and literature teacher would leave for Madrid’s official language school for two months and she would work as an assisting teacher. The teacher would become familiar with a new learning environment and teaching methods and share her own good teaching practices to the receiving school. At the same time the teacher could use Spanish and improve her knowledge of Spanish. It has been preliminarily agreed with the receiving school that the assisting teacher teaches advanced Spanish groups Finnish (mainly discussion classes) about 8 hours a week. In addition to teaching, the assisting teacher will take part in the preparation of small-scale cultural events together with other teachers familiarizing Spanish people with Finnish culture. In the late summer 20014 (July 28th-) the English and German teacher would participate in a two-week language course arranged by Lake School of English in Oxford. The course focuses on creative adult teaching with cultural emphasis. Spoken English is the core on the course offering English for effective communication. The tutors and guest trainers have plenty of experience of teaching English as a foreign language and teacher training. The course also offers a wide range of online material which will be of great benefit to the teacher who also teaches English over the internet. The course also provides the teacher with practical activities for teaching challenging classes, which is of great importance in adult education, too. The participants are teachers from all over the world. This provides a golden opportunity to exchange ideas with teachers from different countries, not to mention a chance to build contacts for the future communication and collaboration. The main objective of the project is to enhance and update the language skills of the staff and develop professional expertise. Developing particularly oral language skills in the target country gives confidence in teaching oral language skills and coaching students for the oral part in the new matriculation examination. The teachers will also deepen cultural knowledge and get international contacts and are able to create new international collaboration between the countries and schools. The town of Savonlinna hasn’t been involved in the corresponding projects before , so this project would act as a pilot the purpose of which would be to gather information and experiences of international exchange, so that teachers would be able to take part in the future international projects and establish international collaboration. The dissemination of learnt knowledge and skills both in our own organization and outside the organization belongs as an essential part to the project. Savonlinna upper secondary school for adults belongs both to Eastern Finland network and to ISOverstas (“BigNet”) that is a developer community including about 75 schools all over Finland. The teachers participating in the project are members of ISOverstas pedagogical management group, so they have an excellent possibility to spread the good practices they’ve learnt to other schools of the network.
