Karel - Autonomous Robot for Enhancing Learning

The multilateral Comenius partnership brings together 3 high schools from Poland, Greece, and Turkey and a nonformal educational institution from Romania.The purpose of the project is to develop curricular materials for science and technology learning with robots. We will design, build and test KAREL, an autonomous, mobile, low-cost robotic platform for secondary schools. We named our robotic platform in tribute to Karel Čapek, the Czech writer who introduced the word robot. This platform will be affordable for secondary schools and will have better performances than commercial available kits with similar prices. We will develop also a curriculum to use with the KAREL robot. The curriculum will include lesson plans from different fields (physics, biology, electronics, mechanics, programming, and robotics).The project is interdisciplinary, challenging and promotes teamwork, innovation and lifelong learning. The participants will use and develop their competences in mathematics, ICT, technology, sciences, curriculum design and languages. All participants will improve their English but they we will also learn robotics terms in languages of the partners.This project involves both pupils (14 to 19 years old) and teachers. The pupils (girls and boys) will participate in all stages of the project. They will research, design, build and test the robotic platform. Teachers (women and men) will guide pupils and will develop the curriculum.At the final of the project all involved schools will have the robots and the curriculum required for a robotic course. The materials developed (robotic platform plans and curriculum) will be freely available in electronic format. These will be useful for schools that want to start a robotics course with a low budget.
