Kansainvälisyyttä Porvooseen - More internationality to Porvoo
Start date: Aug 1, 2015, End date: Jun 1, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Youth Department wants to add and emphasize more internationality in its action and function. The youth of today live in an increasingly international world, but on a practical level, only a few can have direct contact with youth from different countries. With the EVS-volunteer we want to “bring the world closer” to the youth of Porvoo, in practical and concrete level. For the EVS volunteers we can offer a versatile of work with the youth of Porvoo. At the same time, all parties get to know each other’s cultures, through a foreign language and by doing things together.Youth Department of Porvoo has not been involved in EVS before. The EVS volunteers are offered great oppotunities to get to know bilingual culture in Porvoo, in the second oldest town in Finland. Porvoo has a wide and good cultural supply. There are also leisure time possibilities and services of many kinds in Porvoo, for example outdoor activities and sports. Also the capital area with its many opportunities is only an hour away from Porvoo. When working for the Youth Services, the volunteer will learn, how the Finnish youth work is organised. The Youth Services is involved in many projects for youth and it cooperates with several organisations, service providers and municipal service providers. Through the co-operation with the Culture and Leisure Services, the volunteers can learn how co-operation can enrich the activities. Through the co-operation with schools, the volunteers get to know the Finnish schooling system. The EVS volunteers will have a chance to participate in the daily routines and activities of the youth center, according to their own skills and interest. The youth play different games and do lots of crafts in the youth center. Also baking and some other activies are organised every now and then. The leaders role is for instance, to motivate and activate youth to all activities, listen and guide them, notice those who are shy or have tendency to stay off, and cool down the wildest youth and situations. The EVS volunteers may bring and teach the traditions and habits of their own country or culture (for example food, games, music, language) for the youth of Porvoo. The Youth Services organise discos and excursions for the youth and the volunteers can attent to planning and organising them. The volunteers may also visit the schools nearby, and tell about his/her own culture. The volunteers may write a blog of experiences as a volunteer in Finland and Porvoo, and also in youth work. The blog can be published in the web pages of the Youth Department. Before the end of the practise of the volunteers, an international event is organised in the youth center. The information and experiences of the Youth in Action-programme are told and shared to others. Also press will be invited to this event.
