PROJECT
FINISHED
This was the follow-up of the international youth exchange between Hercegkút (Hungary) and Obersulm (Germany) that began in 2005. Since then each twelve youngsters and two teamers travel annually alternating for eight days to the partner community in Germany or Hungary. The German participants were chosen from the visitors and volunteers of the local youth club.
The youth exchange in 2015 was scheduled to be in Obersulm. The theme of this project was “Living environments of youngsters in Germany and Hungary”. Daily alternating issues (education, culture, politics, sports, etc.) presented different aspects of life in Germany and showed that we all participate in a common Europe.
Since most Hercegkútians have German roots and cherish those with heart and soul (historical costume, dance and choral societies, local history museum, German lessons in kindergarten and primary school), the meeting of a former German immigrant culture (the Danube Swabians) with the modern, globalized Germany gave all participants a special, additional stimulus.
Due to the regularity and the degree of attention that the annual youth exchange enjoys in both Hercegkút and Obersulm - and not only for youngsters but for the whole community - a lot of friendships have been built over the last ten years. The achieved sustainability of this project, that lasts now for ten years, is just impossible to reach with once-only arranged projects.
The overall objectives were intercultural learning, the development of solidarity and tolerance and the awareness to create a common, democratic Europe. The working methods ensured that cognitive and experiential learning are in balance. Therefore, i. g. sports was an equivalent method to discussions and workshops. Especially for the socially disadvantaged young people from the local youth work modules in which interactive and nonverbal intercultural learning took place in informal settings were of great importance.
