Jean Monnet Module of Social and Economic Coherence in the European Area
Start date: Sep 1, 2015, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

The proposed Jean Monnet Module on Social and Economic Cohesion in the European Area will provide a coherent undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training program both for undergraduate and postgraduate students with the goal to generate and disseminate knowledge regarding the European integration process and the challenges it confronts nowadays, especially after the outburst of the current economic and financial crisis. To succeed in its goals and attract a big number of students, the module leaders and coordinators will engage in extensive University teaching (total 72 hours per year), covering various issues of the European integration process regarding the European transformation process, the causes and motivations of European integration, existing geographical specificities in European peripheries and qualitative and quantitative dimensions of European integration (such as wage inequalities, poverty and social exclusion, human resources strategies, unemployment, labour markets, ethnic determination of European populations, European funding mechanisms). One of the basic goals of the proposal is to provide innovative ways of learning and teaching through the use of game-based learning applications (GBL or ‘serious games’) and simulation interactive methods in the class. A game-based learning application will be developed as an innovative learning tool that will comprise the basic teaching methodology of the aforementioned module. The proposed game ‘Exploring the EU Integration Process’ will train students to acquire a better understanding of how the the European integration process has evolved over time and what challengers it confronts nowadays. This GBL application will be deployed as on online service for practicing and enhancing skills. It will be based on a branching scenario game structure where learners will be immersed in the European integration process environment.
