Jean Monnet Chair in European Integration
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The objectives of this proposal revolve around a cycle of teaching, research and outreach. It is our goal to increase the visibility of EU integration studies through innovative and non-traditional teaching methods to serve not only goals of improved pedagogy, but to foster increased research cooperation amongst various generations of scholars and policy makers. Thus, the project strives to create innovation and excellence in teaching which in turn, contributes to innovation and excellence in research and to increased outreach and awareness within the broader community. The central objective is to entrench a rich curriculum on European integration studies at York University. To this end, the project ensures that a well-established, tenured faculty member devote the bulk of her teaching time to European integration studies. In addition, we plan to redevelop the existing curriculum to reach more students at an earlier stage in their career; to integrate innovative and interactive teaching methods; and to establish upper-year courses that delve into specific aspects of European integration studies. A speakers' series, workshops, guest scholars and trans-national cooperation will engage young academics in the study of European integration and will expose them to a wide variety of perspectives and inter-disciplinary approaches. These same speakers and guest scholars will collaborate with scholars at York to further enhance research collaboration and strengthen existing networks. In this way, we will encourage a deepening of both teaching and research in European integration studies.Furthermore, we plan to reach non-traditional audiences through a course aimed at retirees and older community members in the Lifelong Learning in Retirement Program. In this way, the Chair Holder can reach new audiences and communities. Here, too guest speakers and researchers can be engaged to further the coherence of the teaching-research-outreach cycle.
