James Gillespie's Primary Language Development
Start date: Jul 1, 2016, End date: Jun 30, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

We aim to improve language teaching within our school, in line with the Scottish Government’s 1+2 language policy, so that all pupils receive a quality language learning experience throughout their education. Our objectives are to -improve methodological expertise in the teaching of French and Spanish to pupils-provide teachers with materials and ideas suitable for the teaching of French/Spanish in the primary school-develop cultural awareness and understanding of contemporary France/Spain-improve participants’ competence and fluency in French/Spanish-further develop our use of ICT linked to language learning. We have 12 staff in total applying for the project – teachers from Early, First and Second Curriculum for Excellence levels. The teachers have varying language abilities ranging from high school language to MLPS trained (Modern Language in the Primary School) who want to build and further develop their confidence and competence in language teaching. The 12 members will all participate in immersion courses in France and Spain to allow them further develop their language competency in all aspects of language learning and teaching (speaking, listening, reading, writing and the country’s culture – expressive arts, global citizenship and enterprise). One of the teachers, the Modern Languages Coordinator, would like to go to both France and Spain to develop both of these languages. She oversees all language learning within the school and support language learning in the upper and lower school, so this would be beneficial. We will continue to build our relationship with a Primary School in Lyon, France. We will hopefully create a new relationship with a school in Spain through eTwinning.Teachers in the school will help the pupils to communicate through ICT with other schools in France and possibly Spain. The long term benefits of this course are for all current and future staff in the school to feel supported in teaching the French and Spanish cultures and languages to pupils with the eventual aim of sharing and embedding a wider understanding of the European Community in our own local community.
