JADE 2
Start date: Dec 31, 2007, End date: Dec 30, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

In Flanders and Nord-Pas de Calais, the number of vegetable farms is decreasing due to a large number of retirements, economic difficulties and European and national regulatory constraints. The crops are quite similar in both areas, and identified problems and preoccupations are often analogous. The farming of fruits and vegetables is very demanding in terms of visual quality and food safety. Therefore, the partners promote an integrated and sustainable agriculture in the cross-border area.In a first phase, they improve technical exchanges and communication between both regions, to then acquire the necessary techniques for the implementation of low-input practices. Generally, the project enables thedevelopment of a pilot farm network that serves as a showcase for regional know-how. Achievements: Various technical meetings and visits of trial fields and pilot farms have been organised. The test themes were aimed at solving issues that growers on both sides of the border were confronted with.To disseminate the common test programme results among the general public, 14 Jade Info bulletins were published. The newsletter also included a workshop and visit calendar. Significant work has been done by harmonising the interpretation and test results between both countries. Thanks to this cooperation, each research institution is able to obtain reliable results by performing less tests per test centre and per theme.A website was also designed (www.interreg-jade.com).Finally, a number of specific meeting and demonstration days were organised, such as the international chicory Biennale, the leek day, the regional meeting on the protection of vegetable growing, on soil and fertilising and on plant protection in practice.
