Investments for an Effective Stormwater Collection and Drainage System in the Salonta - Sarkad Cross Border Area - Phase I (WaterMan2)

The aim of the project is the creation of an effective, environment protective and sustainable storm water collection and drainage system in the Salonta - Sarkad cross border area. Storm water drainage system rehabilitation and extension includes- in Salonta- the rehabilitation and construction of 10338 m collector channels, 3 ditches and 1 collector channel desilted, replacing a pumping station, while in Sarkad- the rehabilitation and construction of 3726 m drains inside the city, Gyepes Channel desilted, restoring the banks of Gyepes, building a new cross-water facility in Vár Street.The project is a continuation to the project ÜPlans and studies for efficient water management in the Bihor-Békés in order to achieve common sustainable development Ü- HURO/0901/184/1.3.4 - WaterMan.The direct beneficiaries of the project are the following: (TG1): home owners: 4585 people within the Salonta-Sarkad area are targeted by the project. The buildings primarily affected by inadequate storm water management are private houses and blocks within the railway station area (842 households), where people have limited access during flooding periods. In Sarkad there are 171 persons whose life is affected by improper drainage of storm water. (TG2): 12 public institutions that face problems during heavy rainfall: 3 educational institutions, as well as the whole area near the railway station - have limited access during floods; in Sarkad, the institutions placed in Kossuth and Veress Ferenc streets are negatively affected by improper drainage (the City Hall, General School, a nursery, 1 day-care kindergarten, a local history collection, the city management office, an ambulance station, a church); ( TG3): businesses: 3 medium and ~ 25 small enterprises. Access to supplies and to clients may be difficult during floods and water logged zones.Indirect beneficiaries of this project are water management institutions/departments in nearby centres (Oradea, Gyula, Békéscsaba), the local governments and water administrations that manage the water systems, different target groups, citizens and economic institutions, business units, cultural and educational institutions, tourists.
