Internationality and phenomenon based learning
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The context/background of project The strengths and traditions in Kauriala upper secondary school are active internationality, wide cultural education and science. Three years ago we wanted to teach with a wider teaching theory, add cooperation within different subjects and thus help students to see entireties instead of focusing on specific details. These are the skills which are needed in further studies in universities. The crosscurricular themes in our national core curriculum for upper secondary schools offer a good foundation for this kind of pedagogical method. So we started to develop phenomenon based learning. Our project Internationality and phenomenon based learning is made to strenghten our own yearly phenomenon based learning projects. Teachers who attended teacher training courses will together plan and manage our next phenomenon based learning project. The objectives of the project Kauriala upper secondary school wants to improve the quality of the internationalisation. Therefore we need (more) qualified staff that can 1. develop – together with the board members - a vision and a school policy plan on internationalisation 2. manage and organise all kind of international activities with or without partners abroad - ensure the quality of the projects and link them to the curriculum 3. communicate and collaborate interculturally with partners abroad Because of the new computer based matriculation exams and new curriculum for upper secondary schools - which emphasize phenomenon based learning - the main needs in our organisation are 4. how to use ICT in learning and 5. new teaching methods. In teaching methods we need to concentrate on projects involving crosscurricular teaching. In addition to the goals mentioned above our school - Kaurialan lukio - 6. emphasizes international relations. We want to have different kinds of partners from all over Europe. The number and profile of participants Seven teachers participated in this project and one participant took part in two mobilities. These participating teachers are arranging a phenomenon based learning project this semester. The teachers of Finnish language and social science are organizing our phenomenon based learning project together with other teachers. They were interested in teacher training introducing phenomenon based learning. The two Spanish teachers were interested in improving their Spanish skills and finding new international partner schools. The Math teacher was interested in different pedagogical methods, ICT in math and finding new international partner schools. Our P.E. teacher took part in a course which was concentrating in internationality. As a headmaster, my passion is to develop internationality and the use of technology integrated in regular lessons and in the whole school environment. Description of the activities 1. Developing a school policy plan on internationalization 2. Developing a phenomenon based learning project next semester 3. Improving the language skills of teachers 4. Intercultural competences 5. How to use ICT in teaching? The methodology to be used in carrying out the project We are interested in improving cooperation with teachers of different subjects. We want to emphasize project work and continuous evaluation. Description of the results and impacts and the potential longer term benefits The goal of our project was to assimilate a wider learning theory and widen the range of international partners with our school. All these international teacher training courses developed the professional skills of teachers and increased motivation for and satisfaction with their important work. The teachers who were involved in this project brought new methods and ideas to our school. This was important when we planned the new Curriculum this year. From students point of view we will improve their academic skills. Expanding international relationships give a large number of possibilities to our students. Taking part in the phenomenon based learning project the students learn to explore a wider crosscurricular phenomenon of their own choice. They will realize the significance of extensive, interdisciplinary research and understanding phenomena more holistically. The students assimilate the possibilities of phenomenon based learning and learn to learn in a different way. It is also important that mobile devices and online learning environments will be an integral part of the learning process in the future.
