International kitchen stories. Eine multilaterale Jugendbegegnung.
Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Oct 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The project „International kitchen-stories“ is aimed at young adults (24 participants from Germany, Poland, Czech Republic and Slovakia) from difficult life circumstances, ages 13 to 16, who are interested in spending time as part of an international group. From 03.07.2016-10.07.2016 in Dresden, they will have the possibility to learn more about food and provisions in the context of regional and seasonal cooking, as well as rediscover the kitchen as a place of exchange of knowledge between cultures. Most of our participants have limited access to extra-curricular educational activities and many of them relatively little positive experience within regular educational structures. Some of them come from rural areas where there is a lack of educational options in their area whereas others are orphans, which means that they are rather unfamiliar with the concept of the family as a giver of stability and values in their lives. During this international meeting we will try to answer together the following questions: What is sustainable consumerism? What are the influences of our eating patterns and eating behaviours on the environment, the Earth population and our health? What is the relation between quality and price in the case of food and groceries? Where does our food come from and where could it come from? Why does cooking together have a positive impact on our social life?Specifically, we are planning a fruit and cocoa workshop and a visit to a community-supported farm. We will cook together with seasonal and regional products and we will also plan a menu, create shopping lists, talk about the amounts of food that are wasted and discuss various alternative concepts that can help improve the present situation. Apart from the contents of our project we also place value on the mutual understanding among the young participants regardless of their country of origin and their social background. We want to encourage their respectful communication by applying various methods of intercultural and cross-cultural learning. The finale of our project will be the organisation of a “people’s kitchen.” We are aimed at showing our participants how important it is to be active. This kind of kitchen is autonomously prepared and organized by the participants; they decide on the menu, the distribution of meals and the promotion of the project among the citizens. The project should serve as an inspiration for the participants as well as for the participating partners for their future social engagement in various fields and for their extended influence on a growing public.
