Integration
Start date: Jun 26, 2014, End date: Jun 25, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Christoph-von-Schmid-School was successful in applying for an Erasmus+ project titled Integration which lasted two years. The number of students whose families are not from Germany is increasing constantly at our school. The aim of our project was to make teachers and students aware of the idea of integration as an integral part of international cooperation in a constantly growing Europe. Our project was to connect people in a changing society with many cultures and languages and to enhance understanding, tolerance and solidarity among national, ethnic and immigrant communities. 12 teachers of our school took part in the project. They are teachers of all different subject such as German, English, French, mathematics, ethnic and religious education, music, history, social studies, chemistry and biology. 8 of the colleagues visited schools and taught together with the teachers at the partner schools in Turkey and Poland. The other four colleagues attended teacher trainings. One teacher training took place in Spain, La Manga, with the topic Developing intercultural competence and learning about best practice examples to fight against racism, prejudice and discrimination in schools. The second teacher training was in Island with the isssue of Diverse society - diverse classrooms. The intercultural meetings involved to get more sensitive against racism and to learn how to take actions against any kind of open or hidden hostility. Teachers have been trained to teach their students to respect human rights even if there are conflicts or differences in opinions. The topic of integration has not only a European dimension, but is also of relevance inside schools in view of the fact that people from different countries and cultural groups live and study together. The participants of the project have been trained how to manage the integration of individuals into the community in class. There is now a heartful contact to our partner school in Turkey, Piri Reis Ortaokulu in Trabzon. We will surely keep contact in future, too. In Poland our colleagues visited Zespol Szkol Technicznych in Mielec. The stay in Poland and the teacher trainings in Island and Spain were very interesting and colleagues at our school started to discuss a lot about history matters and educational issues. Furthermore the participants have been trained to understand the ethnic and cultural background of their students. At the teacher training the participants were given lots of material to involve the aims of integration into their teaching. We have documented the results of our project on our website, in the local press and in our annual reports to inform other members of the school family. We also reach sustainability of our work by the fact that teachers involved have become role models for the integration of students. Teachers gave courses on integration at our school to spread the new skills. Integration is already a part of our school development plan. The experiences of the project Integration have contributed to a positive climate at school and are profitable for the whole school family.
