Integrating Environmental Education and Climate Change into an International Currículum
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

BACKGROUND Over the last year, parents and teachers have identified the need for curriculum to better accommodate environmental degradation and climate change. One of our teachers has developed a plan to Green Flag our school in accordance with the FEE (Foundation for Environmental Education). To do so requires teachers being able to integrate environmentalism into a minimum of 15% of all subject curriclum. Our teachers, most teachers, have not been trained to do this. We know how to deciminate knowledge and measure retention. Changing the behaviors of students requires more, and we know this, and we are looking to educate ourselves to do this. OBJECTIVES 1. To integrate all classes in a school wide continuous project. Green Flag´s platform to unite all students at SIS with a common goal and project. 2. Integrate a cross curriculum project that unites all subject materials. The teachers and direction of SIS have been discussing the need to integrate curriculum across all subject area with selected projects and themes. The Eco Green Flag project will fulfill this school objective (STEP 5 and see themes) 3. Financial Savings, aesthetic appearance, motivation and student empowerment. 4. A way to channel high preforming students. challenge them in an environment that, because of the dynamics of the learning class curve, may be skewed to the left. 5. Community Outreach. One of FEE´S aims is to raise general awareness of environmental activities in and outside the school community. 6. A Newsletter to relate the activities of the school and other environmental news in the area, especially that which affect our community directly. 7. International network and collaboration with other Green Flag Schools. Opportunity for collaboration in Denmark and with other countries. These links facilitate sharing environmental and project information but can also be used as a means for cultural exchange (field trips and visits) and improving language skills, letter writing, etc. PROFILE OF PARTICIPANTS 1. Melissa Castillo. Class teacher, English and humanities teacher, teaching credentials and masters degree in comparative education. 2. Mamo Henry Dabaly Jimma . Primary Teacher. 3. Sonia Bansal. Deputy Head and Class teacher, teaching credentials in business studies. 4. Óscar Manero. Class teacher and Foreign Language Coordinator. Methodologies Teacher centered education at forest school provider to implement FEE seven step program Estimated time frame for the project is 2-3 years Goals A key aim of the eco-school project is to raise general awareness of our activities-throughout the school and wider community to make sure as many people as possible get a chance to take part. Actions will not be confined to the school, the plan is for students to take ideas home and put them into practice. Remember above all, this project aims to change behaviors, attitudes, and the local environment. Its not just about knowing, its about acting. Parents, neighbors, local businesses and local authorities can be the sources of advice, information, practical help, and financial assistance.
