Integrated Solutions for Sustainability Management in Baltic Cities (SUSTAINMENT)
Start date: Dec 31, 2005, End date: Dec 30, 2007 PROJECT  FINISHED

The SUSTAINMENT project aims to meet the needs and challenges of local authorities in moving towards a more integrated sustainability process. The intention is to further develop the current sustainable development processes of the municipalities by creating models for Sustainability Management Centres (SMC), including cross-sectoral policy integration, increased stakeholder participation, and monitoring tools. As an outcome, the project provides models for integrated sustainability management for all European cities. The project enables local authorities to develop their working methods, skills, and personnel in order to significantly contribute to all the dimensions on sustainable development within their city. Cross-sectoral co-operation is emphasized. One key aspect of SUSTAINMENT is to provide a forum for cities – despite their varying local situations - to learn from and support each other in this process. External experts are used as a means for bringing in new information and expertise. The SUSTAINMENT project focuses on four main themes in order to build capacities for the creation of Sustainable Management Centres: 1) Management of the SMC as a strategic unit 2) Governance for sustainability 3) Project Portfolio Approach to sustainability management tool and 4) Promoting administration through good and strong communication. These themes will be thoroughly processed in the main activities of the project through workshops and distance-learning. Achievements: The project has produced URBANworks, a final Competence Development Package - an interactive manual for establishing SMCs. This will also include exercises on each of the project themes and step-by-step guidance on how cities can develop a Sustainability Management Centre. The manual will be available in eight Baltic Sea Region languages, and in English in order to be used by other European cities to support their work towards integrated sustainability management.
