INTEGRATED GREEN CITIES (InGreenCi)

The project aims at integrated management of urban green space with a parallel education, awareness and mobilization of the offending human resources. The achievement of this central goal is pursued through: a) the setting up of a model for sustainable designand redesign of the urban area, with emphasis on the promotion of role of green spaces and b) the pararrel setting up of a model of integrated water management of irrigation water, with emphasis to use of rainwater. The project involves the City of Thessaloniki which is the largest urban center in the border region and the municipality of Haskovo, who is based in the largest city of the Bulgarian border region. The implementation also involves the Technical Chamber of Greece and the InterBalkan Institute of Public Administration in a very crucial role in raising awareness and educating key target groups (engineers). Expected Results: The main project activities are: the development of 2 guides for urban green spaces management and irrigation from rainwater, respectively, the design-based on the guides - of 2 demonstration projects in Thessaloniki, the establishment of an urban green GIS in Haskovo, the education of engineers from the private sector and municipal personnel on the guides, the implementation of an integrated network of measures to raise awareness of homeowners and the school community. The project aims to help create conditions for gradual change of attitudes in the design, production and management of urban space. It aspires to raise awareness and mobilize all parties involved in the operation of the city and to introduce the principles of sustainable urban management as components of interventions in it.
