Innovative agriculture in the cross-border mountain area (AGRIMONT)
Start date: Dec 31, 2006, End date: Mar 30, 2008 PROJECT  FINISHED

“AGRIMONT” stems from the need to find solutions to some important problems related to the socio-economic development of the cross-border area. The actions that will be undertaken in the framework of the project are intended to foster the future development of a sector aimed at the enhancement, conservation and production of native and officinal Alpine plant species, in order to curb the growing estrangement of the agricultural sector in this marginal reference area. The testing, that will be monitored in all the stages of the production process, aims at proving that the officinal herbs sector, to be included as a secondary activity in a potential network of local enterprises, would not only lead to a favourable differentiation in production, but also become a supplementary source of income to traditional agriculture. A consumer-oriented market analysis intends to assess both the marketability of processed products derived from testing, and the benefits for other local economic operators. The project will be pursued through 5 stages. The first two stages include coordinating and analysing the project feasibility, development and monitoring, as well as the characterisation of the production sites. Then, the relevant data on agricultural, soil, climate, economic and market characteristics will be acquired to identify the officinal herbs to be included in the testing. The testing stage aims at assessing the systems of plant propagation and at drawing up a protocol on their cultivation. In the last stage, the project envisages the identification and assessment of potential semi-finished and finished products, as well as the organization of information, interest-raising and resultdissemination activities.
