Improving the teaching and learning of French
Start date: Sep 8, 2014, End date: Sep 7, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This is a large primary school in Rochdale. We have identified an urgent need to upskill in languages in preparation for the imminent arrival of compulsory languages in the school curriculum. We have found a course which meets the needs of our school exactly. We aim to send 4 members of staff on a training course in France. Participants will receive intensive language training and participate in cultural activities. They will attend a school in the local area and set up school links. This course will address the current lack of confidence in language teaching at the school. There will be personalised language coaching sessions which will target staff competence with speaking and listening skills, written skills and specific grammar skills. The participants will be given training in pedagogy and will gather authentic resources to take back and use in the classroom. They will be fully immersed in the Carcasanne community and will therefore acquire rich cultural experiences which can be passed on to the children. The staff will be selected and given Continuing Professional Development targets which will ensure clear objectives are maintained throughout the project. The project will be assessed continually and will be overseen and monitored by the Head Teacher and the Senior Leadership Team. Participants will be expected to share their experiences and language skills with the rest of the staff (52). They will set up school links whilst in France so that children will be able to communicate. Children's learning will be enriched by the confidence and enthusiasm of staff as a result of the project. The school will have a much broader and more relevant bank of resources which the participants will be able to use confidently, and train other staff to use. Therefore the children will have a wider range of activities. They will benefit from witnessing their teachers participating in the learning process as a model of lifelong learning. We envisage an extremely positive long-term impact on the children's learning of languages and understanding of different cultures, with improved staff confidence and ongoing training.
