Improving the Haapovaara border crossing points operational functionality (Improving the Haapovaara border crossing point’s operational functionality)
Start date: Mar 31, 2004, End date: Dec 30, 2004 PROJECT  FINISHED

The goal of the project was to implement the necessary connections for electronic monitoring and travel document inspection at the Haapovaara border crossing point as well to combine the local information technology (IT) networks in order to improve data communication at the border crossing point. In addition, the quality of the electricity connection was to be improved and electricity backup equipment installed. In addition, the goal was to build an appropriate location for the equipment that would promote maintenance and upkeep and to ensure that the equipment would function in the equipment location during all use situations. Accommodation space would also be created during the project by moving terminal equipment from the inspection building to the new equipment location. This would eliminate the need to build an extension to the inspection building, as space in it would be freed up for accommodation. These actions would improve the quality and eff ectiveness of border control and inspections as well as improve the border-crossing areas IT operational preparedness and bring the level of service in line with current standards. 50 percent of the project funding was received from the European Regional Development fund and 50 percent from the Finnish Border Guard. Achievements: The project was completed as planned. The necessary data connections were acquired for the border crossing point, the electricity connection quality was improved, new electricity backup equipment was installed, and the equipment with the cabling changes was moved from the old equipment area to the new one. As a result of these actions, the border crossing area achieved the IT operational preparedness and service level necessary for border crossing points and the quality and effectiveness of border monitoring and inspections was improved.
