IMPROVING OUR SPEAKING SKILLS THROUGH CLIL
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

We are a school with a board of teachers who have enquiring minds and this is how our project has been conceived. It was thought to solve theirs concerns about the internationalization of the school. We are looking forward to open our classrooms to Europe. In our project we try to meet the needs of our alumni who living in a tourist village, in which our school is located, demand a necessity of enhancing their speaking skills in English. We are implementing our lessons in English by teaching arts in this foreign language, since it is mandatory by law (LOMQE). This is another main reason for our preoccupation about the teacher's competence in spoken English. Our main target, once we have attended the teacher's courses, is to reach the pupils from kindergarten to the last grade of primary. So that all of them can benefit from our training. In order to accomplish this, we have made a selection of participants for the project that come from different departments of the school.A kindergarten teacher will be coordinating the English teaching in her department after the training, creating a committee to put into practice the knowledge acquired at the teacher's course. The physical education teacher will introduce the foreign language in her classes in coordination with the other teacher in her department. The music teacher who teaches all primary children will be introducing English through music, working with children with different songs in English. The English teacher will be trained in techniques and ideas for teaching drama in the classroom. After the training and together with the other English teacher, they will prepare and perform by the end of the school year a play with the older alumni in English. We have also prepared a job shadowing in a school in Belgium which has experience in foreign language teaching. It is a school in the north of Belgium, the Flemish speaking part, Their language spoken is Dutch, it is at the border with the Netherlands. This geographical situation gives them the opportunity to work with different languages. We think this job shadowing will enrich us infinitely. Our school is truly for the protection of the languages. Specially since we are speakers of a minority language which needs of constant spreading and recognition. But we are also well aware that being competent in a language as international as English is the key to open minds and doors towards the internationalization of our children and our school.
