Improving language teaching and developing links with schools in France and Spain
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

We want to carry out this project to improve our confidence and fluency in our 2nd MFL, and develop links with schools in France and Spain to raise cultural awareness in the classroom. We want to increase our capacity to be able to give pupils more choice in which language they learn up to A-level and improve language teaching generally, through assimilating new and innovative teaching strategies and techniques and sharing practice with schools in Spain and France. We want to increase the cultural aspect of our teaching and give our children more of an insight into the reality of Spanish and French culture, through creating opportunities for contact with pupils in these countries, working together on joint projects through eTwinning, and increasing the use of target language in the classroom. We also intend to increase the provision of languages and opportunities for our pupils, parents and community. We will make links with schools in France and Spain to motivate pupils and give a real purpose to language teaching, and give our staff the opportunity to experience day-to-day life within a different education system. We will form a professional network with colleagues from the UK and schools in Spain and France. We will increase our pupils’ enjoyment of language learning and their understanding of the relevance and importance of languages to their own lives, leading to an increase in the uptake of languages. Through this project we hope to broaden the horizons of our students, increase their aspirations and encourage them to see themselves as lifelong language learners. We intend to send 3 members of the MFL dept. on a series of two progressive training courses in either France (1 person) or Spain (2 people) over the course of 2 years. The courses we have chosen are two part, intensive immersion courses. They comprise intensive language learning and cultural activities that can be adapted for our pupils. They involve language teaching methodology and professional discussions. As part of the course, participants are placed in a school, allowing them to develop links with colleagues and share practice.By giving our teachers the chance to observe teaching practice within other European systems, we will develop and improve our own teaching practice through assimilating new and innovative teaching methods. We will increase the range of languages we are able to offer at higher levels. There will be an increase in enjoyment of learning, leading to better attainment and better uptake of languages at higher levels. Our learning environment will be improved with more use of authentic materials and resources that reflect the current culture in Spain and France, focus on our pupils’ interests, and are appropriate to their age group. There will be an increase in the use of ICT in our school to support languages leading to better learning. There will be more use of innovative teaching strategies and an increased use of target language in the MFL classroom. We hope that this project will have a great impact on our pupils’ future aspirations and the choices they make in terms of their future education and careers.
