IMPROVING ENGLISH IN RURAL AREAS

CONTEXT: The Project “Improving English in Rural Area” cames along through the necessity of a rural school made of four small villages with a total of 129 pupils of different ages. Recently we have been participating in different Comenius projects which have had a very positive influence on our pupils. Thanks to these previous projects, we have motivated our students, their families and the teacher staff, which are specially aware of the importance of improving their communicative competence in a foreign language and methodology strategies, in order to start a new project in our centre based on bilingualism. This is a very important step, taking as reference the Educative policies that are demanding the progressive incorporation of the educative centres to multilingualism. PARTICIPANTS: Our staff is composed of primary and pre-primary teachers, and teachers of specific subjects. All are conscious of the necessities of learning English as a foreign language, and are making an strong effort to train; that is, participating in different language learning courses in integrated and non-integrated education. Through these training activities we pretend that four of our nineteen teachers get a better communicative competence and methodology strategies to improve the teaching and learning processes of English language. This is a total of 25% of our staff, in which two of them are English teachers and two are Pre-primary and Primary teachers, allowing all disciplines taking part in the project. OBJECTIVES: The specific objectives are: - Improving communicative competence in English - Refining basic skills: listening, reading and speaking - Learning new methodologies for the learning- teaching process - Knowing about new ways of integrating different subjects into the educative curriculum of our school - Establishing contact with teachers of other countries to start a new European projects involving pupils mobilities. ACTIVITIES: We will develop activities focus on training teachers courses abroad based on CLIL and the improvement of the language skills in order to have more staff being able to carry out a bilingual project in our school. AS A RESULT of the teacher training we’ll have a more proficient staff, concerning to carry out new challenges and we`ll provide our School with the essential elements of an European identity. IMPACT: This project will promote also changes in the rest of the staff and their students through the updating of teaching methodologies and the improvement of language skills as well as a change in attitudes, being more open mind. LONG TERM BENEFICTS: It will increase the students’ motivation involving them in different cultural projects task based more than contents based. It will help to set up the bases for introducing new methodologies coherent with the needs come up in a European context. It will help the educative community to develop as European citizens.
