Improve employability and enhance European competitiveness through the acquisition of language and cultural competences in Portuguese
Start date: Nov 1, 2012,

REASONS FOR THE PROJECT Portuguese is spoken not only in Portugal, but also in some other countries, some of them economic powerful countries, such as Brazil or Angola, currently quickly increasing, others less powerful but also important, such as Mozambique, Cape Verde, Guinea-Bissau and São Tomé e Príncipe. All together make Portuguese being a very important language in the international level. However, due to the small size of Portugal compare to other EU countries, makes European citizens are not aware of this importance. Furthermore, Portuguese, in spite of being a language spoken by a great number of people, is included by the European Commission among the languages whose use is necessary to be enhanced in Europe. This makes clear the need of promoting Portuguese language in EU and facilitating the access to Brazilian and other Portuguese speaking countries’ culture, as a necessary complement of the language, particularly for those interested in accessing these countries for business. Actually, many European companies are turning towards Brazil to avoid the current economic crisis. RESULTS Main results will be: • A report on the available multimedia courses and other language opportunities for Portuguese language, highlighting the version of Portuguese used in each one • A report on the needs regarding language and cultural competences of staff from companies dealing with Portuguese speaking countries • A website focused on Portuguese language and Portuguese speaking countries’ culture • A multimedia and interactive Portuguese language course, using mainly Portuguese from Portugal and Brazil, but including also other variants • A wide national and international dissemination of the project and its results, particularly on the Internet TARGET GROUPS INCLUDE: • Companies’ staff interested in learning Portuguese • Adults following language courses • University and VET students, mainly those following courses in business related professional areas
