Implementing Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) in Project Work
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

”Implementing Content and Language Integrated Learning in Project Work ” represents an educational staff development project aimed at enabling teachers and students to achieve much higher results in education, international cooperation and career. Implementation of CLIL prepares school students for studies at university on a qualitatively higher level, gives insight into ESP terminology, provides access to numerous information resources available on the Internet in English and allows both students and teachers to raise the quality of participation in international research projects. In order to reach the project aims the following enabling objectives were formulated: 1) to improve the knowledge of CLIL methodology both among subject and the English language teachers; 2) to establish closer cooperation links among subject and language teachers helping them to adjust their syllabi and programmes and create an efficient cooperation model; 3) to improve the English language knowledge among subject teachers; 4) to enrich the teachers experience in terms of lesson observation practice, cooperation with European colleagues and international project work; 5) to help the teachers of exact sciences acquire new ICT technologies and developing a range of tasks using the recently introduced experimental Apple Tablet class (our school has received 30 experimental Apple Tablets in 2014); 6) to integrate the Moodle system and IKT in education through CLIL lessons, projects and programmes. 7) to develop CLIL materials and Good Practice examples. The combination CLIL, Moodle and ICT works perfectly well when teachers are familiar with all the three aspects of modern education. Thus, the knowledge of CLIL opens the door to multiple information sources, what especially enriches the educational process if students can also use ICT, such as Tablets and Moodle. Thus, professional development of the project participants focused on the three main issues: 1) CLIL courses for 4 teachers of humanitarian and exact sciences, and 2 teachers of English - with International Study Programmes, in Cheltenham, UK; 2) ICT course ‘Future Learning with iPads and Tablets’ for 2 teachers of exact sciences with ATEMPO, in Graz, Austria; 3) ‘Developing Moodle Courses and using E-learning in the Classroom’ for 2 teachers with ITC International, in Prague, Czech Republic. All in all, 10 teachers participated in the project mobilities. However, there were many other teachers who also got involved. During the project, multiple open lessons, seminars and workshops were organised to share the experience gained in the project. This project gave our school a unique opportunity to acquire CLIL on a highly professional level, develop an efficient subject and language teachers' cooperation model and improve the school curriculum introducing CLIL and ICT on a big scale. In the result of the project, a booklet with articles and Good Practice examples on CLIL was published online; a series of educational video clips (sample: https://youtu.be/Cpz44AKiL0c ) and a web-site http://ej.uz/clil-project were developed. In addition, a series of lessons and activities for iPads and Tablets was developed for Exact Sciences; a special 24 h. course for teachers ‘Developing educational videos" was developed and conducted and a 6 h. long workshop “Application of iPads and Tablets in the educational process” was organised for teachers on the Riga City level. To disseminate the results of the project: 1) Rigas Klasiska gimnazija success story ‘From bilingual education model to multilingual education’ was presented at the Education and Information Services of Riga City conferences in June 2015 and 2016; 2) multiple seminars workshops and open lessons were organised on the school level, Riga city level and international level for Siltevaka Gilmnaasiumi Toetajate Uhendus. Finally, the following articles about the project published: •http://www.e-skola.lv/public/76615.html •http://viaa.gov.lv/lat/ek_izgl_programmas_iniciativas/erasmusplus/erasmus_plus_pieredze/macibu_mobilitates_pieredze/?text_id=38940 •http://www.rkg.lv/?page_id=7972 The idea of the project was created in response to our students and parents needs and thanks to the project we are able to provide more learner-centred and qualitative education, introducing CLIL and subject integration in our school curriculum. Students are definitely the main winners of the project, as the learning process is really getting more multilingual, motivating and useful. Teachers and students will be able to use the Moodle system making learning more autonomous. The main long term benefits are professional approach to CLIL and ICT, improved educational programmes, developed cooperation links with other European schools and increase in the quality of education. In future, we plan to continue our work and research on CLIL, cooperating with other schools and teachers on eTwinning platform and organising workshops.
