Implementierung von aktuellen Kunst und Kulturformen im kompetenzorientierten Fremdsprachenunterricht
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

The aim of this Erasmus+ project is to partly restructure and modernize the way foreign languages are taught. Students will be provided with an approach to foreign language learning that is usually considered motivating: they will get the opportunity to acquire a profound knowledge of a foreign language through working on topics such as film, TV, music and advertisement, which form all part of a languages' culture. Thus, an interesting, innovative but at the same time also authentic approach to SL/FL learning should become established at BRG Kepler. In order to ensure that the above mentioned objectives can be reached, SL and FL teachers need to be thoroughly eduacted in this area first. One of the school's most dedicated language teachers, Ms. Cornelia Schröpel, will therefore participate in a course focusing on different types of modern art forms and how to make use of them in the modern FL classroom ("Manifestaciones culturales modernas y su explotación en el aula de E/LE"). This specific course which forms part of a broader teacher training programm will take place in July 2016 in Santiago de Compostela and its target group are first and foremost Spanish teachers. However, upon her return to Austria and starting with the school year 2016/17 respectively, Ms. Schröpel will - after having elaborated a timeline of implementation with the school's principal Mr. Franz Riegler - inform further staff of the language department about new knowledge gained in the fields of methodology, didactics and also content-wise in the course of the training week in Spain. Staff will be further encouraged to implement an approach based on modern art and culture in their FL classes in regualr meetings which might also be attended by staff members of the IT department. Since BRG Kepler is a secondary school that specifically trains its students to obtain expert knowledge in the fields of Information Technology, a cooperation between the language and the IT department might be very beneficial to both parties. Teachers will in the course of the school year work on culture-based lesson plans individually as well as and in teams and will frequenly put their plans to the test. The principal's task will entail regular observation of the teachers' doings (by attending their classes) and providing feedback on methodological aspects of teaching culture-based FL classes. At the end of the school year, students taught through the new approach will be asked to provide their teachers with feedback. They should express an opinion on whether the new approach has significantly contributed to a higher degree of motivation and knowledge in FL learning or not and should also point out any means to further improve this area of FL teaching to their teachers. As mentioned before, the main aim of this project is to modernize the FL classroom and increase the students' learning outcomes by enhancing the teachers' methodological skills. However, the project's objectives reach well beyond the scope of sole language learning: in the course of the project, teachers and learners are supposed to become aware of the wide variety of teaching methods found in the countries of the European Union and how they may contribute to a highly efficient FL classroom. Moreover, the students participating should be brought to realise, that foreign language tends to go hand in hand with foreign culture and that it needs a certain amount of open-mindedness to fully accept, tolerate and understand a culture one is not familiar with. Nowadays, it is definitely essential to not just help students broaden their horizons with regard to factual knowledge, but also as far as respect for other cultures is concerned. This kind of mutual respect is required to ensure a peaceful co-existence of people whose cultural backgrounds may be rather different. To teach children this kind of respectful treatment of others is a task that falls into the school's area of responsibility and would certainly be helped and facilitated by conducting a project that focuses on some of the most important areas of (youth) culture in different European countries.
