IES MONTE NARANCO & EUROPA: CRECIENDO JUNTOS
Start date: Sep 1, 2014, End date: Aug 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

IES Monte Naranco is a school located in Asturias with a broad educational offering spanning compulsory secondary education, baccalaureate studies and vocational training. Vocational cycles centre mainly on IT and communications. As one of its overarching priorities, our Centre's educational project seeks to improve foreign language proficiency while fomenting student mobility via internships in European companies. This all falls in line with the new EU strategy, which looks to see that, by 2020, 6% of young vocational training students aged 18 to 34 spend a training period abroad, one that includes internships at companies. At the same time, the Centre is currently in the midst of introducing a new language project that entails the reinforcement of language skills. Included among this project's actions is the delivery of one/two module(s) in English in each of the training cycles' courses. Within this project, the Centre has detected a need to continue training teachers so that they remain fully proficient in their skills, improve their language skills and observe educational methods at other European centres that have similar projects. The activities proposed are as follows: a) Student mobility for internships in the UK (10 students) -a.1. Recently graduated students aged between 19 and 35 who already have work experience at industry-specific companies for at least three months, language skills and motivation and interest in the European experience. -a.2.Students aged between 17 and 30 who are to carry out training in work centres at European companies, with scant industry-specific professional experience, substantial motivation, language training and training courses. b) Mobility for teachers for an observation period at companies in the UK (6 teachers) Teachers will visit companies as shadows to observe working methods while learning about the companies at which students will subsequently work, thus creating networks of collaboration with businesses. Carrying out these activities will require the aid of the host partner in the UK -the Tellus Group- to actively assist in the assignment to companies and practical aspects such as accommodation, travel, etc. At the same time, the partner will assist in the monitoring, dissemination and final evaluation of the project. Following the planned schedule, recently graduated students would be selected in June for the internships so that teachers use the summer period to conduct the observation period at companies and hold meetings with the host partner to define the participant's profile. Students would perform internships at companies for three months and would receive a certificate at the end of their stay. Students enrolled on the practical work experience course (FCT) would carry out their internship from April to June, and would also earn a certificate at the end, apart from recognising their time as counting towards credits in the Spanish educational system. The desired results are to: -improve student employability as a result of the new language skills acquired and new professional experience. -bring the educational system into the business world as a result of networks of collaboration and teacher observation periods. -improve teachers' skills and thus improve the level of teaching. -create a benchmark linguistic project in the region. The project is to be disseminated through the press, workshops, informational sessions and a blog developed jointly by the host partner and Centre. The expected long-term benefits are an improvement in students' employment on the job market, a decrease in youth unemployment and the creation of a benchmark bilingual programme in Spanish vocational training.
