IES Massamagrell, New Horizons for Plurilingualism
Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project arises as an educational challenge to address the changes undergone by the socio economic environment of the student body in our institution. Our main objective is to enhance the learning of a foreign language, and hence improve and broaden the most relevant linguistic and communicative skills. We aim at providing our students with the necessary tools for their employability, as well as derive full benefit from the opportunities available. We therefore have followed three strands. First, our teaching staff has to be trained in the CLIL methodology. When being properly implemented, Content and Language Integrated Learning may help boost performance at both content (the subject itself) and structure or form (the foreign language used in the teaching task). Describing and discussing matters of interest in a language which is directly relevant, may bring major benefits in terms of vocabulary, fluency and speed of take-up. We are thus convinced that the above mentioned practice will provide our students with an internationalism experience, therefore increasing their motivation. Second, we have deemed it necessary to enhance the linguistic and communicative skills of our teaching staff regarding the English language (broaden their general knowledge in order to achieve an adequate command of it). The starting point is their level according to the Common European Framework of Reference. Once settled, we adapt such level to the structured courses offered by our associate organization. Finally, in order to carry out a coherent project, the English Department has geared towards renewing the teaching methodology applied in class. Foreign language acquisition, from the earliest possible age, implies adapting to the ever changing society we live in. We need to identify new insights and the possibility to implement new integrated methods with which to achieve the greatest school success. In essence, this project seeks to start along the path towards Plurilingualism. We want our students to attend their classes with enthusiasm and will to learn, being aware that such an effort means new social and labour chances, hitherto closed to them.
