Identity Through Dance Summerschool
Start date: May 1, 2016, End date: Oct 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Culture association Jotain Odottamatonta ry. (JOTODO) from Tampere, Finland, is organizing youth exchange “Identity through Dance Summer school” (ITDS) in collaboration with Belgian cultural youth organisation Mooss. The summer school is taking place in Tampere, Finland 31.7.-7.8.2016. Before ITDS they organize Advance Planning Visit (APV) 13.-15.5.2016 in Tampere, Finland.Altogether 24 youngsters (of which 10 are immigrants) from 16 to 26 year old from Finland and Belgium are taking part in the summer school to exchange ideas about identity, collaborate together and share their interest in dance and movement. The group is guided and supported by a professional team, 2 Finnish and 3 Belgian group leaders. The youngsters chose “identity” to be the main theme of the summer school which will be investigated through the medium of dance and movement. The participants want to learn how identity is build and how to understand identities of persons with different (ethnic) background. The theme was suggested and chosen by the young participants who are taking part in ITDS. The information was gathered and planning has been done with the help of two online chats and Skype conversations held during the autumn 2015, together with the youngsters. The ITDS has three main objectives: cultural exchange, exploring identity and participation & cooperation of the youngsters. ITDS consists of different sessions where the participants get to know each others and other participants’ cultural background. We will explore different points of view to identity with the help of discussions, workshops, visits, tasks, games and performances.Participation of the youngsters has played important role since the planning of the summer school: the youngsters have been planning the content, their roles and group leaders’ role during ITDS, working methods and locations. The participating youngsters take an active role also during the whole ITDS: during morning classes the participants will get both input and share their own knowledge and skills and during visit to Pori Refugee Centre they will give workshops designed by them. The participants will prepare and present a showcase within the theme “Identity through dance” in Tampere (which can be various things e.g. a performance, flashmob, video, exhibition…). There will also be separate sessions to concentrate especially in working on the showcase. There will also be informal learning, culture-exchange and leisure activities. These leisure activities (forest game, games in the park, cooking exchange) are planned by the youngsters.ITDS will be evaluated three times together with the participants and they will get a YouthPass -certificate after the summer school. ITDS encourages youngsters to use the co-operation skills, leadership and management skills also in the future. The participants learn to question and understand the complexity of identity through the medium of dance. At local level ITDS creates new insights and opportunities for cooperation in the future. Summer school will be highly visible project in Tampere, and will spread more knowledge and information about the work of the collaborating organisations. Internationally ITDS will generate in-depth knowledge and experience to develop future projects and partnerships in the long term and with greater international and European connections and the results will be discussed in the Summer school Evaluation Seminar, organized by Mooss in December 2016.At local, regional, national and European level we expect wider support for the visibility of dance and dance education as well as growing the visibility to the questions of the constantly changing Europe and the meaning of collaboration without borders.
