The desire of two language teachers to work together and develop enriching educational actions for the students, the teachers and the school ended up on a European common project. A number of teachers of English, Spanish, History, Geography, Mathematics or Science as well as the students' supervisor joined this grouping party already approved by the school Principal.
Three main points emerged from the discussion.
At first it appeared that the geographical situation of Reunion island contributes to the building of a gap between the island and its mother country. A large number of Reunionese students do not feel attached to France and to Europe because they have never been there and thus find it difficult to identify to a culture located 10 000km away. The notion of French citizenship is therefore abstract. Language teachers underline the fact that the lack of curiosity, the distance, in terms of cost, from foreign countries does not encourage the interest of their pupils in learning a foreign language. Quite many students hesitate when it comes to study in France or abroad.
Then, it is stating the obvious to say that it is necessary to include the sociocultural, historical and geographical specificities of our environment into our teaching habits in order to develop the notion of French or even of European citizenship. The reality of the learners must be taken into account. Teachers are aware of the necessity to awaken the curiosity and to stimulate the students' interest but they know it is also important not to forget the local specificities which are part of their everyday life.
Finally, the group of teachers brought to the fore the necessity to help the learners to consider their role within the European community and to realize the impact they can have on the evolution of Europe.
It led the teachers to consider how to fit the inland specificities into their teaching. The reality of the students must be taken into account in order to help them open their mind to the outside world.
The members of the group are curious to compare what they have observed in their school to the experiences of their European pairs living similar geographical and cultural situations. They would like to create a group of teachers of many different subjects who would be willing to work on the topic of insularity. Putting together european isles to have a reflexion on how to deal with the difficulties encountered in the activity of teaching, linked to the insularity.
In order to fulfill the needs enumerated above, the school has planned to send one teacher of English to attend In-service Teacher Training Courses organized by International Study Programmes in the UK, (Practical Methodology workshops on teaching English as a foreign language) and one teacher of Spanish to the "instituto Cervantes" in Madrid. These courses will provide many new teaching ideas, skills and materials which can be used in our school to motivate pupils in class and to improve the quality of the teaching of English and Spanish (and other modern foreign languages) in the school.
Moreover, the school has planned to send one teacher of Spanish and the students' adviser to observe and compare the habits of teaching in a school presenting similar specificities in relation with insularity in Gran Canarias .
Back from their stay in Europe, the teachers will commit themselves to explain and give talks to their colleagues to make sure every member of the teaching community can get inspiration from the experience of the participants to the mobility.
