ICT as a tool for intercultural and media education

Macedonia is a country wealthy in many ways, not least in its diversity of people, culture and languages. That is the reason why we are all trying to involve intercultural context in education. In that direction we need methodology and pedagogical strategies of intercultural education that are consistent with the surrounding condition but at the same time with European space. We need contents that are exploring the comparative view on various common and cross-cultural issues. That is the reason why we have found our needs in the objectives of the offered training: ICT as a tool for intercultural and media education. It is aimed that the participants will work with sensitiveness to individual differences in order to be prepared to meet different cultures. Our school wants to sent three teachers at this training that will be the most corresponding to our needs and that can share learning skills with their colleagues in interesting and comprehensive way. They can adapt learned experiences in our surrounding and after that through their own examples can disseminate the knowledge with the teachers in our school, and broader with the teachers in Macedonia. Methodology that is going to be used on the training is based on variety and interactive approaches concerning the aspects of cultural diversity in education and ICT tools. Emphasis is put on the methodology of developing media literacy in the teaching and learning process, developing computer literacy by the use of e-learning platform, interactive boards and the digital books. Video clips, slides and other visual media are going to be used to illustrate aspects of cross - cultural communication and working styles. A lot of ICT in the support of the intercultural and media education. ICT belongs to everyday life of young people, so the use of digital media as a learning tool is going to provide extra motivation for students and will be based on their interests and everyday realities. In intercultural education digital media will determine the focus on values, attitudes, critical thinking, and consciousness rising of students rather than simply on knowledge acquisition. At the beginning of the project prior the training participants are going to do some research about intercultural/ multicultural policy in the national curriculum and the whole educational system in Macedonia. They will do some pre-course reading, recommended by the organizer of the training, too. This will be the starting point of the training, identifying the intercultural policies of different countries of the participants, discussions about the cultural dimension of globalization, intercultural competence, all that from the aspect of using ICT, especial digital media. During the course Moodle platform is going to be used for collaboration, ISL online videoconference, Movie Maker, Power Point, Interactive board, "the cloud computing": dropbox, google drive, digital book... Group work, a lot of cultural activities is in addition to the objectives of the training. Knowing about each other, working together, preparing different materials and their presentation is other way to see in practice how ICT can be use for intercultural and media education. There are going to be presented some researches and discussions are going to be started about cultural diversity in an international context, implication of intercultural and media education in teaching and learning process. Only teachers that are prepared for intercultural cooperation and collaboration with teachers from other countries with different backgrounds and cultures can develop those skills at the students and will be their leaders in the process of their active participation in the European context. Another advantage of the training is the media education. In our school we have started some workshops about advantages and disadvantages of using Internet, being safe on Internet and how can we all contribute to the better Internet. On this training using different ICT tools various approaches will be used and we can see how media education is developed in different countries, we will broaden our knowledge and can implement learned lessons in our educational system. After the training and dissemination we are expecting to have teachers with good understanding of the key conceptual frameworks of the intercultural field and critical understanding of the principles of intercultural and cross-cultural education. Teachers will have theoretical understandings of culture and cultural diversity in the context of globalization, cultural diversity in contexts of education policy, management, curriculum, teaching and learning. We hope that teachers will be able to incorporate intercultural elements into their own areas of teaching, they will use ICT in education (including interactive boards and digital books) with the aim to develop 21st century skills at the students especially in the field of digital literacy and respecting different cultures.
