HUFS Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence would aim at promoting excellence in teaching and research in the field of European Union studies in the Republic of Korea. The actions taken by the Centre will be focused at fostering the dialogue between the academic world and policy-makers, in particular with the aim of raising awareness about governance of EU policies. Main theme of the Centre is Evolving Process of EU-Korea Relations. By this, the Centre is going to review the ongoing issues of cooperation from global, regional and bilateral points of view.Three areas of research activities of the Centre will be New EU Global Strategy and East Asia, Engagement Policy toward North Korea and Emerging Policy Cooperation between the EU and Korea. International relations and comparative regionalism are main theoretical perspectives while interdisciplinary approach shall shed light on to individualize the bilateral relations.In academic activities, the HUFS Jean Monnet Centre will create a Centre of academic excellence in EU studies by strengthening the EU knowledge base among students, teaching staff and researchers. The project will also introduce new EU-related courses in various departments and graduate school of HUFS. The Centre plans to hold an EU Circle for opinion leaders and policy makers in Korea, on EU-Korea cooperation in foreign affairs and security, engagement with DPRK, and cooperation for diverse policy issues. The Centre will also provide wide-ranging target groups with easier access to EU-related information, using various cutting-edge technologies such as smartphone as well as conventional communication systems of media.The Centre will pursue academic exchange activities to achieve the core objectives regarding EU studies. The Centre plans to expand its expertise by inviting scholars and experts in various sectors from both Europe and East Asia, including the government, the press, NGO’s, and the academia to its outreach and academic activities.
