HOMEMADE HARMONY
Start date: Jan 5, 2015, End date: Oct 4, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Context : The project entitled Homemade Harmony follows on from the exchange programme the two twinning organisations have carried out for the benefit of local youth over many years. This project is bringing a significant change to the role of young participants who have now been offered the opportunity to be fully involved in every stage of the design and implementation of the project. Participants : The project was led by 17 French and 18 Irish 13 to 23 year-olds, and 2 leaders for the Irish group, and 3 French leaders (a director and two summer camp councillors for the meeting) . Most of the young participants took part in the July 2014 meeting in Ireland. Among them 6 young adults have benefited from several exchanges and are willing to take initiatives in order to find their place by getting involved in the twinning Objectives : To pass on to the younger generation keen to get involved in European projects the knowledge and skills gained by their elders through numerous exchanges (recycling of experience!) To develop manual, artistic, language and intercultural skills through cooperation between two nationalities To stimulate creativity and ingeniosity which favour innovation in all fields of society. To raise awareness of the resources available through recycling waste materials, change the way this waste is seen, Activities : During the six months preceding the meeting, the Irish and French participants made instruments from recycled materials. They chose songs and tried to figure out how to arrange them with a mix of recycled and traditional instruments. Thanks to a Facebook page, they exchanged information and ideas to prepare an original musical show which was finalised during the meeting and performed twice in public. The theme of recycling was further developed through visits to local businesses acting in this area and during workshops where participants showed young children how to make instruments Communication activities implemented collaboration between the two groups, contacts with partners and the promotion and dissemination of the project .Participants also contributed to project management : schedules of activities, regular assessment, organisation of tasks at all stages of the project. Methods : They favoured - small group activities suitable to peer-to-peer teaching and non-formal learning - awareness of the requirements of the project by all participants - autonomy of the participants and provision of support according to the needs expressed or observed. Results and impact : - leading an Erasmus+ project has enhanced the Essert-Ballinamuck twinning : more dynamic image, visibility thanks to media interest , recognition of the commitment of volunteers, new partnerships, trust from local authorities and decision-makers. New membership: a young participant has joined the board of the organisation. - the participants have gained knowledge and developed manual and artistic skills, and increased self-confidence by designing and performing an original show using homemade instruments. - awareness of the benefits of recycling has initiated two sustainable projects likely to reduce waste of materials and food . - the young people have gained or developed project management skills (communication, budget, logistics). Staying together and sharing everyday tasks gave them the opportunity to improve language skills and to become aware of cultural differences that they learnt to express and accept.
