Hold your own; professional teacher development
Start date: Jun 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2017 PROJECT  FINISHED

Hold your own; professional teacher developmentA new project that aimes to tackle at least three different topics by providing specific courses for the tto teaching staff of the Visser't Hooft Lyceum in Leiden. Instead of sending an entire group of teachers to the same course this project wants to address several topics. In the first place we would like to invest in developing a havo tto curriculum that really pays tribute to havo students. Secondly, we would like to develop a coherent tto program for the upper grades, where all subject focus on research. And finally, we would like to invest in creating a challenging program for internationalisation for all students through motivating and teaching our colleagues about all the possibilities. We would like to achieve these goals through following courses, tailor-made for us. This will require to discuss possible programs with different learning institutions. We do believe that the English language and CLIL didactics are however key to this plan and therefore we would like to invest in teaching facilities in the UK.Because we believe in working with small teams, the idea is that a total of 24 teachers will take part in the training courses divided into small teams. Adding to the three topics above, we want to invest in a fourth group of teachers in order to standardize their level of English and CLIL knowledge. The teams of teachers will be owners of their own project in the sense that they will be required to draft a proposal concerning their topic after completing the course. This proposal should cover multiple years and has to be transferable to colleagues. These proposals will have to be accepted as policy plans by the management of the school and then implemented. Course, proposals and the final plan will be evaluated by several groups including teachers, parents and students.Goal is to achieve a situation where students after graduating from our school will be able to explain positively about the plans that were set in motion (from a students point of view). Furthermore it is the explicit goal to share our findings and experiences with our partner schools in SCOL. Mostly with the ten primary schools that recently started with implementing vvto English in their schools.
