Hohe Begabung, geringe Sprachkenntnisse - Umgang mit Flüchtlingen am Gymnasium
Start date: Sep 1, 2016, End date: Aug 31, 2018 PROJECT  FINISHED

"Carl-Friedrich-von-Weizsäcker-Gymnasium" has recently been awarded the title "School of the year" in the category "social projects" four school's work with refugees. In the years before we have been certified as a school which excellently works with specially gifted and talented children. Our new project's aim is to combine these to strings of success in a project called "highly talented with little language knowledge- successful work with refugees on a high grammar school level in the German school system". It is our aim to provide education on a level qualifying for university, independent from the German language knowledge. 25 members of staff would like to support our project. We want to teach in multiple languages, considering different cultures and using new methods and devices after successfully taking part in the Erasmus+ programme. Our participants wish to take courses in school development and quality management, compare our approach with approaches in other countries from Finland to Spain. Some teachers would like to improve their curricular competence in other languages than only German with the help of CLIL courses in the UK and Ireland. Other staff members want to enroll in courses in Italy to overcome language and cultural difficulties with a focus on communication beyond borders. Platforms like educationgateway.eu seem inspiring for all our participants and will help our project to prosper. As a long-term result we wish to include refugee children, have them successfully take part in higher education, independently from their German language competence. Nevertheless we want them to improve their understanding of German language and culture and at the same time challenge and consider all other students with their talents and needs on a high level. We have planned this project over a period of months, agreed on the title and then all staff members looked individually for courses to take part in which would be beneficial for our project. Ideas and project details have been presented to our school management members and were accepted. Now the whole school community looks forward to implementing and pursuing these ideas into new practice abroad and then at home.
