Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Jun 1, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn has successfully participated in the ERASMUS programme since 1987. The ERASMUS+ programme, as the previous programmmes, substantially contributes to promote one of the goals of the internationalization strategy of the University of Bonn: to further internationalize studying and teaching and to promote study abroad. As different status groups participate in the programme – students, teacher and administrative staff – ERASMUS+ also excellently supports the University of Bonn in its goal to widely embed internationalization within the university. The University of Bonn achieved its goals for the project 2014 to the greatest possible extent. Thus, the planned total number of participants could be realized by nearly 100 %. The high level of student mobility could be kept up, although there was a slight shift to SMT. The University of Bonn, however, highly welcomes this development because internships abroad contribute in particular to promote the employability of our graduates and are a good alternative to longer study abroad periods which are difficult to realize in some subject areas. We could also achieve an increase in teaching staff mobility in order to strengthen the internationalization of teaching and the exchange of innovative teaching methods for enhancing the quality of teaching. In terms of information, counselling and guidance before, during and after the mobility, integration of incoming participants as well as financial management the ERASMUS+ programme is implemented on high quality level at the University of Bonn. Processes and division of tasks within the university are clearly defined and documented in an internal hand book. Generally, the awareness for guaranteeing a high quality in the mobility projects has increased amongst all stakeholders within the university. For example,, all ERASMUS partnerships were evaluated in 2014 and the issue of improving recognition is high on the agenda in all faculties. The extremely positive overall assessment of their mobilities by all participants clearly shows that the participants were very much benefitting from their study, teaching or working experience abroad. This positive overall assessment is an essential indicator for the successful implementation of the programme at the University of Bonn. But some aspects of ERASMUS+ are also met with criticism at the University of Bonn. In particular as the advantages and benefits of the new programme are contrasted by disproportionately increased and very complex administrative efforts and because some programme regulations are hardly to realizes due to study structures or federal state laws. Changes in programme regulations would therefore be highly appreciated.
