Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our institution is recent as it was created in 1994.It is part of the ISEN Group (Institut Supérieur de l’Électronique et du Numérique), founded in 1956 by Norbert Segard, the then French Minister of Telecommunications. A standard programme had originally been set up according to the French Higher Education organisation with 2 years of "classes préparatoires" followed by 3 years of Engineering Cycle. A few years ago, this programme was remodelled in order to better suit the European Standard (LMD). The 3 first years are now called: CSI1-2 & 3 (Cycle des Sciences de l'Ingénieur 1-2 & 3) then followed by the final 2 Master years (M1&2). ISEN-Brest is a "Grande École" recognized by the French State, accredited by the CTI (Commission des Titres d'Ingénieurs). It was granted the European EUR-ACE Label (EURopean ACcredited Engineer). As of September 1997, a new department was set up in order to help students willing to carry out internships abroad. Thanks to the Leonardo da Vinci Programme, our students were granted scholarships for numerous years and that enabled to increase the number of departures (first internships abroad: summer 1998). Objectives: At ISEN-Brest, 100% of the students must validate a period abroad. The duration of this period is at least one month but as of September 2013, the new students (who will graduate in October 2018) are required to spend at least 3 months abroad (academic period and/or internship). Students' numbers and profiles: In 2014-2015, 8 students carried out an M1 internship in the following countries: England, Portugal and Spain. These internships are part of the degree requirements and were completed either in a university department or a company, in the following fields: robotics and computer sciences. Description of the students' projects: Software Engineering for Energy Access in Africa Evaluation of ECG Data Compression Algorithms Fuzzy logic based evaluation of a wearable system functionality Running some tele-robot experiments with users, evaluating different mechanisms for teaching robots new skills using a web interface Adapt several modules of the main product in the Database layer to be compatible with Oracle. Research of code management repositories, Environment creation of the selected technology Results and impacts and, if relevant, long-term benefits: Students' accounts: - "During my internship, I managed to live a full-immersion experience. I also improved my level of English. But the main advantage was to stand back from using English. In fact, I realized it was always possible to make oneself understood and to pass on messages with simple words. I am not yet bilingual but I am now able to hold a personal or professional conversation, to make a presentation in English and to contact English-speaking people. What is more, during my Eramus experience, I managed to meet people with different nationalities. It was very exciting and I have become increasingly interested in other cultures and languages. Thus hopefully I will visit Poland, Italy or other countries where I will be able to meet the people I got to know during these 3 months. I now feel more concerned by what is going on in the world". -"Thanks to this experience, I managed to improve both in English in my host company but also in Spanish in everyday life. In addition, I met a lot of new people, I made new friends. I have become more mature and self-confident. I can better and better adapt myself to new envirionments. This mobility has strenghtened my wish to work abroad once I have graduated." - "The internship I carried out last summer brought me a lot at both human and technical levels. The Erasmus+ Programme allowed me to complete this experience thanks to the financial support and a significant training in English. Training online really gave me the opportunity to improve and to discuss with my colleagues. I could feel the results rather rapidly. I was a bit hesitating at the beginning but I gained confidence and ease. Carrying this internship abroad was definitely a determining factor when I was selected by the company for my sandwich courses". These accounts and all the feedback given over the years do show the most positive impact of the students' mobility. This arouses their curiosity by making them willing to discover the world.
