Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Context and Background of the Project Johan Carballeira Secondary School is a state secondary school regulated by the Regional Ministry of Culture, Education and University Organisation of Galicia. The main pillars of our working agenda are based on promoting entrepreneurial spirit, language learning and on improving our students’ employability profile. Our aim is to prepare professionals who will be able to face the challenges inherent to a globalised society and to dodge the current unfavourable labour market. In our school two Superior Vocational Training Cycles, among others, are taught: Administration and Finance and Metal Structures. In order to obtain the degree of Higher Technician students must successfully pass their internship periods, whose length is 384 hours, the equivalent to 22 ECTS credits. Bearing this aim in mind, the Department of European Programmes was created during the academic year 2010/2011 in order to offer our students the possibility to carry out their internships in an international context – a determining experience, in our view, for their academic, professional and personal development.Since its creation, 4 years ago, we have implemented several mobility action programmes with our vocational students in Portugal, Great Britain and Ireland. We now consider it is necessary to offer our students of Metal Structures the possibility, so that they can spend their internships in Germany, a country where the demand for labour in the metalworking industry is very high. Objectives Volume and quality of the grants: - To increase the volume and quality of our training mobility programmes. - To expand the target geographical areas. - To reinforce the commitment of the Department of European Programmes in order to work on the development and improvement of our internationalisation strategies. - To increase the collaboration between teachers and students and the team of European Programmes. Students - To acquire the necessary competences to face the challenges posed by the European and the global labour market. - To test their knowledge and skills in an international environment. - To foster our students’ integration into the global labour market. - To respond to the demands of the labour market successfully. - To be able to deal with the current crisis successfully. Institution and Teaching Staff - To prepare our institution for the demands of the European labour market. - To turn Johan Carballeira Secondary School into a landmark for European mobility programmes. - To make our institution more attractive. - To create new collaborative networks. Number of participants and profiles Despite having applied for eight mobility grants in our report, we were granted four of them. These four grants were given to students of Administration and Finance and Metal Structures after an equitable and transparent selection process. The chosen students carried out their internships in Germany (2- Metal Structures), Ireland (1-Administration and Finance) and Portugal (1-Administration and Finance). The participants of these mobility programmes were required to show a strong international vocation. The profile we sought regarded students who are socially and actively involved in their daily lives, who are also self-initiative, decisive, self-confident and above all, who feel European and show the capacity for integration and cooperation. Activities Meetings with the students were held before their departure, as well as informative talks exclusively addressed at students who had asked for them, lessons to help them write down the necessary documents (cover letters, Europass CVs, etc.) and meetings to help them out with their travel and accommodation arrangements. Finally, some courses were taught to help the students reinforce their linguistic and cultural competences regarding the country of destination. The candidates also took part in the risk prevention courses, which are annually taught in the school. During their stay abroad, the students had to fill out biweekly questionnaires regarding their working life during their internships. Besides, they were invited to post entries and comments to the blog on the Erasmus mobility program and a Whatsapp group was created in order to facilitate the communication among those Erasmus students and even with the Department of European Programmes. After the mobility grants: collection of certificates, sharing of experiences, informative talks addressed at new students interested in the internships and dissemination of the outcomes obtained. Outcomes and Impact Both local and international impacts have been achieved through the organisation of seminars and meetings with students and teachers. Dissemination through the media has been effective in the local as well as the international sphere. Some evident outcomes are the increase in the companies’ demand for students of our school to carry out their internships with them and new job offers.
