Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

The Erasmus programme was established in the University of Thessaly in 1996, with a minimum number of student exchanges in the first place, but gradually increasing in number, with 108 student mobilities for studies, 49 for internships, 14 staff exchange for teaching and 39 staff mobility exchange. The University?s goal is not only to increase the number of mobilities but also to secure the quality and the successful completion of those exchanges. That is why, language competency is of great importance in order to carry out an exchange or to complete successfully the studies abroad. The majority of our students has completed their stay at the Host Institution, having acquired more than half the ECTS units that were required of them according to a previously agreed upon Learning Agreement. All the students that were abroad for an internship have returned, having secured an outstanding evaluation from the host organizations. The studies and internships carried out abroad, are recognized by the University and the Departments upon the students? return. The exchange programmes concerning teaching staff have been carried out without a hitch, and many of the teaching personnel chose the language of the host country, since they were competent in that language. Moreover, an increased number of students from Departments that do not often participate in the Erasmus programme wished to do so this year. A number of teaching staff that hadn?t taken part in an exchange before, also decided to participate this year. Great emphasis was also put on staff mobility in order to encourage collaborations among institutions. Regarding student exchanges, the desirable outcome, other than the students? academic performance, was the exchange of cultural elements and singularities, the interaction of students from different cultures and civilizations. Also, students got familiar with new methods of teaching, participated in various activities of professional, scientific and academic interest. Friendships among students from different cultural backgrounds were forged and the students also became acquainted with new customs and values, as well as a foreign language and the European mentality. In regard to staff mobility for teaching, some of the outcomes were sharing teaching experience, getting familiar with postgraduate study programmes and courses that are not available at our university, exchanging information on various academic topics and building the prospects of new collaborations, getting acquainted with new learning and teaching philosophies. They also benefitted from the Host Institutions? libraries getting access to knowledge and the chance to enrich their academic material. They got in touch with different teaching methods on the same academic fields, and gained teaching experience. By participating in the exchange programme, the staff has succeeded to share experience and knowledge, to become acquainted and exchange views on the various work systems per field, to comprehend and appreciate people from different backgrounds and the way the work, to view a different perspective on how to build international partnerships both professionally and socially, to broaden their professional views by coming in contact with different work approaches and methods, that they, themselves, could adopt. During their stay, the incoming students had the chance to become familiar with the Greek culture and civilization, through various activities organized by the University of Thessaly, such as Greek language courses, traditional Greek dancing lessons, visits to museums, etc. The schedule for the incoming staff that was previously agreed upon managed to make profit of the available time with useful and educating activities. For this academic year, we have already scheduled an Erasmus Staff Week, for which the proceedure for final selection of the candidates is over and the number applications was larger than expected.
