HECANSA is a public company which belongs to the Regional Government of the Canary Islands. Its aim is to contribute to the training of the Human Resources and companies in the tourist sector. HECANSA has two Hotel Schools which run vocational training programs in the accommodation, food and beverage and kitchen fields. Since the academic year 2013/2014, HECANSA runs its vocational training programs according to the dual system methodology. HECANSA is attached to the Consejería de Educación y de Universidades of the Regional Government of the Canary Islands. The tourist sector has a huge importance for the economy of the Canary Islands. The weight of tourism on the regional GDP is considerable. The hotel and catering industry are key areas for the tourist sector as they provide support for its economic activity. This sector requires well-trained human resources and able to speak foreign languages. Since 1992, HECANSA has been signing agreements with educational institutions and hotel companies located within the European Union and outside de E.U. to allow its students to carry out placements to get familiar with other cultures, to practice foreign languages and to help them to join the tourist labour market. Likewise, since 2013, to increase the quality of the dual system methodology, HECANSA has been in contact with German educational institutions. The two staff activities were related with the implementation of the dual system methodology. HECANSA Academic Director travelled to Germany and met with DEHOGA representatives to learn about the implementation of the dual system from the company point of view and HECANSA received the visit of the Director of a German Higher Educational who explained to our academic staff the dual system methodology from the educational standpoint. 23 of our Second Year students carried out a placement for 6 months (some of them for a shorter period) in companies located in the U.E. in the accommodation, food and beverage and kitchen areas having the opportunity to improve their skills in the foreign languages. As regards staff activities, they have contributed to the quality of the dual system methodology implemented by HECANSA. Concerning our students, their international placements have been very positive reinforcing their personal esteem and professional skills to increase their chances of getting a job in the tourist sector.
