The University of Kent has a long tradition of participation in the Erasmus mobility programme. Study and work abroad is a key feature of our study programmes and academic and professional services staff members are also strongly encouraged to take advantage of the opportunities offered by Erasmus. Our objective each year is to promote the opportunities widely and highlight the many benefits of mobility and ideally to increase participation rates wherever possible. In the 2014-15 academic year 40 students participated in traineeships, 182 students carried out study placements, 10 academic colleagues carried out teaching mobility and 9 colleagues undertook a training visit, ranging from job shadowing to attendance at Erasmus Staff training weeks. The staff and students came from across our 3 faculties and represent a range of subject areas and backgrounds. The results of this mobility include the contribution to the learning outcomes of our degree programmes, the enhanced personal and professional development of the individual students and staff involved, the increased internationalisation of the institution in terms of the exposure to a range of different languages, cultures and educational systems and the impact that has on the content and quality of the curriculum and the student experience. Longer term benefits are likely to include increased mobility due to the dissemination activities of those returning from mobility, development of international networks and collaborative projects, as well as raising awareness of international issues and raising the profile both of our own institution abroad but also the profiles of our partners within our own institution.
