As in previous years, the University of Leeds was the beneficiary of a large Erasmus grant to support mobility of students and staff to partner institutions in Europe, in line with our goal of increasing the numbers of our students gaining international experience during their degree. In 2014-15 these included 222 student mobilities for study, 203 for student traineeships, and 14 staff mobilities for teaching and training. There is a trend for these numbers to increase year on year at Leeds. Work placements in Europe increased slightly, but study mobilities in Europe were actually lower this year owing to greater numbers of our students opting to study outside Europe in (mainly) English medium institutions. We have been increasing the number of exchange partner institutions very rapidly, adding around 100 new partners in the last two years in anticipation of growing demand.
The reduced numbers may also be accounted for by the fact that this was the first year for the cohort that was paying higher fees (ie £9000 p.a.), who started their degree courses in 2012/13. The overall figure for student numbers was reduced generally and so this was reflected in numbers undertaking study or work placements in Europe. The expense of an additional year may also have deterred many students from taking part, although the tuition fee being limited to £1350 is perceived as being good value by students and parents.
