Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Sep 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Imperial College London is a longstanding supporter of EU programmes, most notably in the areas of research and knowledge transfer but also educationally where the College has a longstanding commitment to the provision of science and engineering undergraduate proge which incorporate an opportunity to spend a year abroad without prolonging the length of the degree. Our commitment to the EU?s agenda in the area of education and training is reaffirmed by our participation in Erasmus+ which during 2014-15 had the following key objectives: ? To maintain and develop existing activities for students: The project contributes positively to the College?s provision of transnational educational opportunities within a varied and attractive programme offer to students. The project supports and develops established study exchanges (many of our partners are fellow members of LERU), while increasingly helping us to develop the place of transnational traineeships within both undergraduate and postgraduate study. ? To encourage student participation: Our varied and attractive programme offering, including Erasmus+ activity, is open to all who are appropriately qualified. The College?s approach to student recruitment, namely to do so from the full cross-section of society including students from lower socio-economic groups, fully supports the aims of Erasmus. The project?s standing continues to significantly influence the development of our co-curriculum which includes excellent in-house language training. ? To improve the outcomes for students: The project is clearly supporting the College?s aim to have the very best of student experiences which enhance students? employability. The College fully acknowledges that participation in Erasmus+ enhances the skills and experience which students can acquire and which are required by employers, for further study and for pursuing a career in research. ? To further promote the place of transnational teaching & training visits. This supports the College?s aim to strengthen collaboration with business, academia, non-profit, healthcare and government institutions across the globe. Collaboration with external partners is positively correlated with academic excellence, and with improving standards. The far-reaching opportunities available for training within Erasmus+ further encourage the means by which knowledge transfer can be achieved at different levels within the College, and help the College to build a supportive, inclusive and highly motivated staff community across all disciplines, functions and activities. Activity Profile: In total 72 natural science and engineering students and College staff participated. Study: Students ? 42 full-time undergraduate (UG) students undertook approved study plans at an approved partner university, of which 40 were full year and 27 of the 40 were participating on UG masters degrees where the year abroad replaces (with full academic recognition) a year of study at Imperial. ? Results: all except one student (medical reasons) completed their period abroad. ? Impact: Outward mobility involved 26 partner HEIs (29% of links) in 6 countries while inward mobility involved c.45% of all partners. While participant feedback appears to be positive it will be further scrutinised. Traineeships: Students ? 19 full-time UG and postgraduate (PG) students undertook approved training plans. ? Traineeships were afforded recognition in the following ways: (1) assigned credit at UG and PG taught level; (2) contributed to a module (the module being assigned the credit) at UG and PG taught level; (3) contributed to an UG assessment objective which when successfully completed would be awarded extra-ECTS credit (extra-curricula); (4) would contribute to a PhD registration. ? Results: all students completed their traineeship. ? Impact: Participants? feedback will be scrutinised but is overwhelmingly positive. Mobility involved a total of 14 commercial and non-commercial organisations in 8 countries, including labs at two universities. Training: Staff ? 10 participants, selected from both academic/research (5) and administrative roles (5), undertook an approved training plan at a total of 10 organisations (8 were universities) in 7 countries. The majority of visits were for a full week. A further member of staff was selected but withdrew. ? Results: All 10 successfully completed their visits. In addition to the on-line survey each participant was also asked to provide a personal written perspective of their experiences. ? Impact: All 10 participants were very satisfied with their mobility experience. The personal perspectives will be used to promote the activity in 2015-16. Teaching: Staff ? 1 academic undertook an approved teaching plan at a partner HEI holding a ECHE. The teaching period dovetailed with a period of research-related activity at the same HEI. ? Result and Impact: The visit was successful and the participant was satisfied with their mobility experience.
