Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Within the Erasmus Programme the PWST National Academy of Theatre Arts in Krakow establishes cooperation with foreign higher education institutions based on bilateral agreements and EU programmes. Active participation of PWST in the Erasmus Programme began in the academic year 2000/2001. Every year we can boast a growing number of signed agreements as well as students, employees and teachers sent abroad and those coming to our academy. At present PWST cooperates and implements projects with several European universities. Bearing in mind the goals and objectives of the Bologna Declaration and Lisbon Strategy, PWST continues, at the university level, the policy of European integration and internationalisation of education. Every year the programme is becoming increasingly popular and enables more and more students, staff members and teachers to raise their awareness of functioning in a broadly defined context of European art education. Visits of teachers to partner universities are primarily aimed at mutual exchange of experiences in the field of training future theatre artists, searching for good practices and seeking inspiration in the circle of other theatrical and cultural traditions. These visits along with student internships provide an opportunity for practical verification of the acquired workshop skills in another language area, different stylistics, aesthetics, theatrical tradition and even habits of the local public. Internships also allow participants to share their experiences with students trained according to foreign local curricula. Travelling to a foreign university facilitates students’ self-reliance in terms of controlling their learning process, making substantive decisions and broadening their cultural horizons. Moreover, such visits help overcome fear and barrier connected with the new and unknown, promote the attitude of openness and sensitivity as well as give students a different perspective of perceiving their own actions. The participation of non-teaching staff members in the Erasmus Programme enables the exchange of good professional practices, and acquisition of new skills and competences. It allows these participants to strengthen their professional and personal relations and reach mutual understanding. In terms of internal procedures regarding the participation in the Erasmus Programme, PWST invariably focuses on several basic rules: availability of offers for all potentially interested applicants, transparency in establishing rules, and possibility of constant contact with people involved in the programme implementation (coordinators). The application process is friendly, clear and understandable. The Erasmus Programme Committee in PWST is composed of the representatives of students, teachers and non-teaching staff. Interested parties are entitled to appeal against the Committee’s decision. In the reporting period,7 planned internships were organised, resulting in an overall effectiveness score of 100%. PWST is a relatively small university (approx. 500 students), which limits the possibility of a considerable increase in the number of organised Erasmus stays abroad. The key aspect here is the sense of responsibility for the quality of education (classes are conducted in small groups; the language of instruction is Polish). All employees of PWST do everything within their power to make the coming students feel equal members of the local academic community. Foreign students are given the opportunity to be accommodated in our dormitory. After more than 15 years of participating in the Erasmus Programme we can fully recognize and appreciate its benefits.
