Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Zagreb University of Applied Sciences (Tehničko veleučilište u Zagrebu – TVZ) conducts 6 undergraduate and 3 graduate study programs in Civil Engineering, Computing Engineering, Electrical Engineering, ICT, Mechatronics and Orthotics & Prosthetics. TVZ has about 4000 students, 150 full time employees and numerous part time teachers from enterprises. Erasmus+ mobility is TVZ’s main mobility programme in which we are active 6th year. As our EPS states Erasmus+ is main instrument of TVZ internationalization and key point of this process is to increase student/teacher/staff mobility in both, quantity and quality. Our allocated/spent ratio of grants in Erasmus+ 2014 Call in each activity is following: SMS – 8 students (40 months) gained / 6 students (33 months) spent; SMP – 12 students (60 months) gained / 11 students (58 months) spent; STA – 8 teachers (88 days) gained / 8 teachers (63 days) spent; STT – 9 persons (81 day) gained / 29 persons (215 days) spent. TVZ is still in developing phase in Erasmus+ mobility what is clearly shown from the numbers above. Despite stronger promotion of the programme directly to each student group in the class, there is still stagnation in SMS&SMP number of mobilities, though we have noticed increase in SMS&SMP quality (students need less time to find a good placement, more ECTS gained at SMS, more engaged student applications). In SMS activity we see slow increase in both, number of students and months spent at mobility, while in SMP activity we see slow decrease of student number but increase in months spent at mobility. TVZ’s strategy is to strongly support student placements as we are University of Applied Sciences and placement is obligatory part of most of our curricula. From SMP numbers and our experience in the field we conclude that placements last longer (usually 6 months) and have better quality as students have time during their placement to finish more serious projects assigned to them. In this Call we have seen an enormous increase in TVZ’s employee interest in mobility, mostly teachers going to STT to establish new cooperation in their area of work (visiting partner HEI and exchanging experience, working on laboratory enhancements) or to enhance their personal and professional skills at some short course etc. We encouraged this interest as we see it as an incubator for future enlarged outgoing and incoming STA. We think also that it will help as part of direct promotion of Erasmus+ mobility to the students – teachers promote Erasmus+ mobility and their Erasmus+ experiences directly in their classrooms upon their return to TVZ. To sum up, we are completely satisfied with our STA/STT achievements in this Call and plan to continue working on quality of applications in the future together with more encouragement of STA and incoming STA for the next Calls. As a part of STA/STT dissemination process, we also introduced obligatory Reports for STA/STT (both PowerPoint presentation and word report) which are then put on the Intranet. PowerPoint presentations are held in classrooms or at stuff meetings. On the other hand, we are not at completely satisfied with our SMS/SMP results so far. We plan even stronger promotion of Erasmus+ mobility and its benefits directly to our students in each lectures group. TVZ International Office has created a leaflet with TVZ Erasmus Student Alumni experiences for encouraging outgoing student mobility and a TVZ Booklet in English for promoting TVZ at partner HEI, thus increasing both student and teacher incoming mobility. Also we see a great chance of improvement in internationalization at home. Our incoming student numbers are increasing well and we strongly promote mixed groups of students (works out especially well in lab exercises). This year we hosted 10 incoming students at two Departments and few incoming teachers. We are satisfied with the enormous increase in incoming students number (300% from last year) and will work to continue this increase. We are not completely satisfied with the number of incoming teachers and plan to encourage our teachers to promote incoming mobility to partners during their own Erasmus+ mobility stays at partners HEI. In this Call we have increased the number of partner HEI opening also some new countries – we have new partners from Finland, Turkey and Estonia. Altogether we have more than 20 partner HEIs and are working on increasing this number. We also encourage our teachers to establish relations with new and interesting similar HEIs which then results in signing new Bilateral Agreement. Our plan for next Call is to continue to promote Erasmus+ mobility to our students and teachers, to work more on dissemination of their Erasmus+ stay results and experiences, to promote TVZ even better to partner HEIs and to increase the number of partner HEI, opening also new countries as partners.
