Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Participation in the Erasmus+ programme is a natural continuance of the project work from the previous LIfelong Learning Programme. The goal of the University of Zagreb (in later text “the University”) is to continue developing as the lead university of the region which incorporates strengthening international cooperation on all levels. We are not an integrated university - we consist of 33 constituent units (29 faculties, 3 academies and the Centre for Croatian studies). Recognising the importance of creating new international opportunities for all our students and staff the University has been extraordinarily successful in mobility projects. As the strongest higher education institution in Croatia we accomplished more than 50% of all outbound mobilities realized in Croatia within the framework of Erasmus+ programme Key Activity 1 for programme countries. The year 2014 in the Erasmus+ programme proved to be the most productive in terms of mobility numbers with realized mobility of 1045 outbound participants: student mobility for studies 620 participants, student mobility for traineeships 270 participants, staff mobility for teaching 81 and staff mobility for training 74 participants. Success is a direct result of our commitment, perseverance and adaptiveness including improvement in quality supported by efficient organization. Certainly, this outcome was made possible by our competent and dedicated staff implementing the project. To shortly summarize our project activities: with close to 75.000,00 enrolled students the International Relations Office centrally implements the project for all 33 constituent units for outbound and inbound mobility. Calls for all activities and results are published centrally with equal rules. The project activities are planned at least a year ahead; we include all participating constituent units in frequent discussions, we adopted a set of internal rules, guidelines and supporting information for our participants that are made public, transparent, offer equal treatment and equal opportunity for all participants, all which is continuously modified according to needs and/or changes of the programme. As the implementation is centralized, the University has a good overview and is able to monitor the project work precisely. We use feedback of the participants for each call and each activity to upgrade solutions or introduce new ones. With resourceful planning and good management of funds we exceeded planned mobility numbers and achieved 110% in outbound studies mobility, 150% in traineeship outbound mobility and 160% in outbound staff mobility. The results are in line with our internationalization strategy and institutional objective to increase the mobility focusing on practical work experience of students. The realized mobility of staff enhanced the quality of the home study programmes introducing innovative teaching approaches combined with a more open adaptable learning environment for both home and international students. Especially for our mobile outbound students we have observed growth in their learning abilities and skills, higher level of self-confidence, more open and independent individuals, culturally and socially closer towards integration into the European society. Moreover, their positive personal and academic development reinforced interest in their academic specific fields as well as provided great motivation for their peers to participate. The traineeship mobility has a longer-term benefit for our students because they are introduced into the labour market without previous work experience for which they do not have many opportunities within Croatia. As a result, they enter the labour market more prepared and slowly the Croatian employers are starting to recognize the mobility traineeship experience not only as a benefit but as a competitive advantage. For inbound mobility the numbers are rising rapidly each year coming up to 569 students for studies mobility in this programme year. The central International Relations Office, the international relations contact persons at faculties and academies and ESN Zagreb office support the inbound students and staff and continuously strive to improve their learning experience, the quality of their cultural experience as well as their social integration. Consequently, the higher number of inbound participants contributes to a multi-cultural and diverse academic environment encouraging exchange of new ideas and mutual communication allowing for genuine connection and progress. Furthermore, we undertake great efforts to provide inbound participants with a deeper insight and understanding of Croatia and its perspectives. Viewed through the participant’s eyes, the best result we can hope for is for them to learn how to put their ideas into practice in their everyday life and survive in this most competitive and volatile world.
