Higher education student and staff mobility project

Outgoing mobility of students and staff is one of the main activities that Hedmark University College focuses on to further develop our international profile and part of this mobility is supported through the Erasmus framework. Hedmark University College has among the years established numerous international partnerships within the Erasmus framework and now Erasmus+. During the Project period 2014-2015 we have supported outgoing mobility of 11 students (both mobility for studies and for traineeship) and 7 staff (both teachers and administrative staff) which resulted in a use of ca 70% of the actual grant that we were allocated. We have on the other hand received 44 Erasmus+ incoming students (plus additional incoming mobility within other exchange programs) only in the spring semester 2015. Our aim is thus to reach a more balanced figure in terms of incoming and outgoing mobility and specifically, to increase outgoing mobility of students and staff towards our Erasmus+ partners. We have seen that outgoing mobility to a few (6-7) selected Erasmus partners appears well established and relatively constant from year to year. This mobility is mostly directed to Sweden and the U.K. During the project period 2014/2015 we have carried out the following activities to promote outgoing student mobility: regular information meetings for students at each Faculty, recruitment of "buddy" students for the international students on campus and selected news published on our website about incoming students (especially when holders of specific grants). These activities have raised interest among the students and have surely contributed to recruitment of outgoing students to Erasmus partners but we have not always succeeded in canalizing mobility within the Erasmus+ framework. A few number of students has instead been travelling to countries outside of EU (e.g. North America, South Africa) or to Nordic partners through Nordplus. We however also regard as critical the active participation of the academic staff in promoting opportunities for a study period abroad therefore aim at increasing it. Unfortunately, we have seldom been able to carry out balanced mobility (in and out) with selected Erasmus partners. However, a stable outgoing mobility to a few Erasmus partners has contributed and contributes to maintaining a close relationship with the host Institutions, something which often results or is connected to cooperation among the academic staff and possible application for external funding sources as partners (e.g. Interreg with Sweden).
