Higher education student and staff mobility project
Start date: Jun 1, 2014, End date: Oct 1, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Context, background and objectives of the project The aim of the project is to promote the internationalization of the Universitat Internacional de Catalunya (UIC Barcelona) that is part of both its name and its organizational strategy. Thus, one of the 5 core ideas of UIC?s Strategic Plan 2010-15 and 2015-22 is internationalization. The planned actions to realise these ideas are conducted through the Erasmus+ program and other mobility programs: 1. To strengthen mobility programmes at the UIC and to offer new international programs: The Erasmus+ programme is one of the programmes that is being promoted. 2. To identify 'objective' countries from an academic point of view and those having higher employment rates. For example, efforts are being made to sign agreements with countries like the United Kingdom. 3. To select quality mobility programmes with countries with high employment opportunities in order to enhance employment in the country of destination. 4. To increase the exchange of students to foreign universities and to facilitate access to mobility programmes. 5. New regulations for language level: all students who graduate from UIC Barcelona will have to certify a language level of at least B2, of a third language. Usually this is English (the first two languages are Catalan and Spanish). Giving our students the possibility to participate to an international mobility programme with a scholarship ensures them to strengthen their language skills. We are making efforts to increase exchange opportunities for staff of our University as well. Organizing exchanges for staff favours institutional relationships between both partner universities. It is also a way to explore other potential collaborations with the same institution or with potential new partners (universities, companies or research centres). At the UIC we spread and promote the implementation of the Erasmus+ programme to all groups to which the programme is directed (students and staff), and of all types of mobility (study mobility, curricular and extra-curricular internships, recent graduates and mobility for teaching or formations). We currently have 151 Erasmus agreements for the 8 faculties of our University, with countries such as: Germany, Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Korea, Croatia, Slovenia, Finland, France, Holland, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Romania, Sweden, Turkey and the UK. Profile and number of students: - 40 students of study mobility - 15 students of internship mobility - 2 professors of teaching mobility - 1 professor of formation mobility - 2 administrative staff of formation mobility Description of the activities carried out: The University organises the activities of the Erasmus+ programme through the Department of International Relations and the academic coordinators of each faculty. Together with other departments (such as the Language Department, Student Department, Sport Department, Solidarity Department, Communication Department, coordinators for internships, Barcelona Centre Universitari) they all favour the promotion, diffusion and management of this program. Necessary actions have been conducted before, during and after the mobility to comply with the Erasmus Charter. The following ones are highlighted: - 1 or 2 information sessions per faculty on international mobility for students to explain the possibilities of the Erasmus+ programme. - A second information session in some faculties at the end of the course - Personalised attention from 9am to 6pm to answer questions from students and staff. - The improvement of channels to spread the programme: website, weekly newsletter "did you know?? for students, posters, intranet, advertisements in class, e-mails, weekly newsletter for staff. - To share best practices: participation of students who have already done an Erasmus exchange. - The implementation of the OLS tool (Online Language Support): diffusion and monitoring of the tool. - Management of the programme through the Mobility Tool. - Participation in information sessions of SEPIE (Madrid and Valencia), meeting with the European Commission in Brussels and participation in various seminars (ACA in Brussels). Results, impact and long-term benefits: The results have been very good as well as the academic and personal experiences shared by students and staff (cfr. point 9). The (short and long term) benefits are an improvement of key competences (social, linguistic and cultural) as well as job prospects (salary and employment) and organizational and leadership skills.
